I'm not sure what your exact model is, but the first thing I would check regardless is the boot sequence.

  • F1 or F10 to acces the BIOS Select
  • System boot configuration
  • Boot options
  • Make sure the boot order is set to start with our disk drive
  • F1 or F10 to save any changes made (there is a list of what each key does, usually on the very top of the screen)
  • Follow on screen shortcuts for exiting without saving if the settings are correct.
  • Re-boot

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: HP Pavilion Dv5-1008TU Hard Disk / Hard Drive not detected.

The hard drive test could not detect the hard drive, indicates a faulty drive.
Also if the drive does not spin up or is making clicking sounds then the it is definitely faulty.
You need to buy a new drive.

SOURCE: My hp pavilion dv 9000 does not start.

Hard drives are cheap. Find out what type of drive this supports (i.e. ATA or SATA), and buy a new drive. They're quite easy to replace, too. You'll just need a recovery CD to re-install your OS (operating system) after you put in your new drive.

SOURCE: touchpad won't scroll on hp pavilion zv5000 running windows xp

Hi Natasha

ZV5000
To get the scroll function working again, do the following and follow these directions exactly.

1. Click Start >Control Panel
2. Double click Mouse Icon
3. Click on Gestures tab
4. Place a Checkmark against Use Vertical Scrolling function and Use Vertical Scrolling function.
5. Click Apply > OK
6. Click the Setting button to adjust the scroll speed.

If you have tried the above and you couldn't see the "Gestures" tab, do the following.

Download the ALPS Touchpad Driver from the HP website >here< (if the link doesn't work, go to the HP website, find the ZV5000 and look for the ALPS Touchpad driver) and save it on your desktop.

Now uninstall the old drivers using Device Manager
1. Right Click on "My computer" and select Properties
2. Click on Hardware tab > Device Manager button.
3. Click on the + sign next to Mice and pointing devices.
4. Right Click on the Alps Pointing Device and select uninstall.
5. Double Click your new driver file that was saved on your desktop, to install it.
5. Restart the ZV5000. Windows will detect the hardware and will load the new drivers for it.

Check to see if the scroll function works. If not, do the following

1. Click Start >Control Panel
2. Double click Mouse Icon
3. Click on Gestures tab
4. Place a Checkmark against Use Vertical Scrolling function and Use Vertical Scrolling function.
5. Click Apply > OK
6. Click the Setting button to adjust the scroll speed.

If you have followed exactly what I have said here, the scroll function will work fine. Let me know how you go!

Best wishes

SOURCE: asi gave mine laptop compaq c700 pc notebook to hp

Only Hp knows what that means in their diags. Get it shipped back and take it to a Locally owned PC shop and have them take a look at it. It is possible that you have just enough file fragmentation and file structure corruption that it is fail diags. Why did you take it in to be looked at anyways?

SOURCE: Every time I turn on my new PC I get a black

Hi there,

I have the exact same problem with my HP HDX 16. I would suggest calling the HP techcenter and exlaining the problem to them. Chances are they will want to take a look at it and will possibly replace your laptop. I haven't yet done this, but have allowed my computer to rest for a while. Leave it shut down for maybe 30-60mins and then try rebooting. Hopefully you will atleast be able to start it in safe mode with command promt. Open the command promt as the administrator and type CHKDSK which will perform a check for bad sectors in the hard drive. Hope this helps. otherwise give HP a call :)

" no boot file name received ", Why did my desktop say this?

First test is put new harddrive in and when it goes to boot press Delete,
for entry to Setup, make sure new hard drive is found in equipment.
System equipment, if so then Put Operating disk in CD drive and check
check boot list , Put CD drive first then save and let boot up. It will automatically load the operating system back in the new hard drive.

As far as your saved material in old hard drive. You can check hard drive on second hard drive cable or with a USB adapter connection to
see if able to boot hard drive up and view files. If it works then you can
drag material from one window the desktop (To drag material just put mouse on file and left click-hold down button and move to desktop it will
automatically copy file to desktop.)

Yes , I think you will need the HP support specially if the PC is under warrranty cover. The errror is a fault in the hardware possible the memory or the hard disk.
So it is best to seek further advice before you give up the warranty claim.
You can call up the nearest HP support and convey these details., get intouch with the technical section.

I turned my pc on ( hp pavilion 751n) one day and it said "no operating system", how did i lose XP. I don't have a boot disk. And I can't get it to go in safe mode like i use to do for...

The problem is you lost your Master Boot sector on the hard drive. As far as the computer is concerned there is no data on the Hard Drive. There are services that have the ability to recover a drive in this condition but they are few and expensive and take weeks to months at times to get the job done. This could just be a faulty drive or it was due to a Virus like MBR123 which targets the Master Boot Sector of a hard drive.

My computer will not start up it tell me to insert a system disk. what is a system disk

Your computer cannot boot up because it cannot find a boot up program from any of your boot devices.
This fault could be caused by a faulty hard disk or you have a non-boot floppy disk in the floppy drive. In this case remove the floppy disk and boot up your computer again.
If the hard disk is faulty, replace the hard drive and install Windows on the new hard drive, plus the computer's device drivers and your programs to get the computer operating again.

HP Pavilion zv6100 laptop CMOS will not recognize the HD

You could have a faulty disk controller. Try inserting a different working hard disk into the HP and see if it can detect it in the BIOS. If not then the disk controller is faulty and this is a motherboard problem. A replacement motherboard may not be worth it, put your money towards a new laptop and put the hard disk into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an USB external hard drive.

Installed a new hard drive

Well, since the new hard disk is not formatted, and there is nothing currently on it, you will not get a dos prompt or an operating system detected. What you need to do is insert your Windows XP disk, then reboot the machine. When you see the HP screen, tap the F12 key, which will take you to a boot menu. On the boot menu, choose your CD drive, then the computer will boot from the windows disk. From there, just format your disk, and install Windows.
