My explorer is running at very low RPM when I start it and will sometimes shut off

I start it and it will dropto low RPM and then shut off unless I give it gas and it still runs bad though (Shaking and such) it will also rev up in the same pattern as someone making a beat.

The throttle positioning sensor is bad and needs replaced. My 1995 F250 did the same thing and runs fine now the sensor has been replaced.

SOURCE: engine starts and shuts off

I woulds replace the fuel pump. But before doing that go under the hood and on the right hand side there is a grey back open it up and you will see some plugs, There is a 3 prong plug take it out and replace it, that plug is placed in the front. I would try thats first only because this is lets just call it a battery for the gas pump and is it is not working then the gas pump will not work and you will not has a car. Some times the car will start fine and some times the car will not. So replace the plug before the gas pump. This part costs about $4.00. If for some reason you are not able to fine the box let me know and I will do my best to get you the info you need in order to find it.

SOURCE: 2001 Ford Explorer won't start!

This vehicle does not rely on anything but computer timing and fuel to stay running. With that in mind the computer relys on many sensors to judge the proper fuel mixture to keep the car running. The first place to look is the fuel system. If the pressure is low it may be the fuel pump or a blocked fuel filter. If the pressure is correct you would move on to checking the injectors. If all if right with the world on those two it becomes a bit harder. The engine timing relies on quite a few sensors, there is a sensor that replaces the distributor it can slip if the screw is loose and cause timing issues, there is the O2 sensors which from a cold start should hold the voltage high telling the car to provide fuel, it they hold the voltage short then the car will not provide enough fuel to keep the engine running.

You would need a tool to read the engine diagnostics, when you first start the truck the engine should report that it is in "open loop", and switch to "closed loop" when the O2 sensors reach the 600F operating temp that they need. If this does not happen check the sensors. If your tool does streams you can also pull a chart of the O2 output, at cold start it should be a straight line at the top of the chart, and switch to a sine wave with the average of the wave being zero once the system goes into closed loop.

SOURCE: ENGINE MISSING ABOVE 3800 RPM

no the code is most likely from a dpfe sensor for you egr system not the egr valve itself.a clogged fuel filter though might cause your low revs

SOURCE: 2004 ford explorer- shaking, riding rough, smell gas

Get the codes read first,If that does not lead you any where then you need to do a compression test.Do this only after you confirm that the fireing order is correct as it is easy to replace the plug wires and get them plugged on the wrong pins on the coil pack.the coil pack is marked, which will help.

The tune up may fix the problem. If it doesnt it may be the throttle position sensor. Tune it up run some good fuel injection cleaner thru it. If it still does it, drive it to autozone, or advanced auto or whatever place you have near you that is like them, and they can hook a code scanner up to it for free. And we will go from there.

That would be where I would start. That code means that the computer cannot get the idle up to where it wants it, which usually means the IAC is stuck. since its the only moving part in that system it is more prone to failure than the electrical components.
