It sounds like you probably have a bad spot in the cord. What happens is you get a kink in a spot or you run over the cord and it loses continuity there, but only when it's bent a certain way. Turn it on and wiggle the cord from one end to the other I think you'll find the problem there.
Otherwise, if that isn't it, your motor is possibly the problem. Does it smell like burnt electrical when its running? A frozen motor carbon brush will cause this or just plain worn out carbons can do it as well.
Lastly It could be the switch but they generally just stop working and its on or off and no in between.

I'd bet it's the cord.

Probably not. Both motors usually wont stop working at the same time. You have given us very little information. Model number? Brand?

My vax model number v-60 keeps cutting out and wont start for an hour or , then only for a minute or so

Sounds like a bad motor. The vacuum probably has a heat sensor that cuts the power if it gets too hot. If the motor gets hot it probably has a short.

Short run cycle, cuts off

Dyson cut out
The motor is fitted with a thermostat. If the motor gets too hot the thermostat turns the motor off to avoid burn-out.
When you normally vacuum you are using the machine in its normal upright position. When you clean your car you use the hose. When you cover the hose nozzel to sook stuff up it deprives the motor of air. Air helps keep it cool. (Its similar to puting your hand on the back of a hairdrier). Add to this the fact that any air it does get is a bit warmer than usual.
Also a dirty filter will cause the motor to suffer lack of air so always wash your filter at least every 2 months.

Just stops working during hoovering

Hi, it sounds that you may have a fault in your cable sometimes the wire inside the cable gets broken and only connects now and again when in the right position. I remember reading some where about this person had a dyson and had to get the wire changed for a second time as this was the fault. They put it into a dyson repairer to get the job done as you have to remove the motor. I no that's what you need to do on a dc07 animal. If its not the cable then it could be the temp cut out switch my first motor would go for so long hoovering then just stop and you would have to wait till it had cooled down then it would go for another short time. I had to get a new motor that time but it was covered by dyson . When the dyson man arrived i told him it was cutting out and he just fitted a new motor. I have since just replaced that motor myself rather than buy a new dyson. Always remember to remove the plug from the socket when doing repairs to your hoover.

Vacuum cleaner shuts off after short use. What's the reason. Motor seems very hot.

Almost all vacuum cleaners have a thermal cut-out, which operates when the machine gets too hot. It resets automatically when it cools down. Overheating is almost always caused by a blockage. Either the filters need cleaning or changing, or there's an obstruction somewhere in the pipe-work. Make sure all the pipes are clear so there's good air flow and you should be back in business. If the problem persists there may be trouble with the motor itself, in which case you'll need professional help (or a new machine). Good luck!

The motor overheats and shuts off. This annoying because it has done it at least 5 times today during normal vacuuming. It shuts off easily when you use the hose and canister to clean the steps or around...

Vacuum does not run at all

It is most likely the switch if you are not getting any continuity to it. the switches on these units are designed to cut power to keep the motor from shorting out. you can get the power switch here for 28.99 less the shipping. http://www.kirbypartstore.com/kiswas.html

It sounds to me like the power cord has a short. To test your power cord you need a multimeter. Test continuity threw the power cord, from the male plug prongs, to the wiring inside the vacuum. You should get continuity from one prong on the male plug to only one wire on the other end of the power cord. If you test one prong but get a readying on 2 wires, then it is crossed. If you dont get any continuity on one or more of the wires, you have a short. A common place for a short in the cord is the male plug, you can find a replacement male plug at a hardware store and cut off the old one. When wiring the male plug, black wire goes to the gold post, white wire goes to silver, and green wire goes to the green post.

If your carbon brushes on the motor are warn, then that could cause the motor to stop, but other parts of the vacuum should still work so I dont think it is that.

Hope this helps.
