I found that the proper way to do it only worked when the ink light was flashing red. Then when I pressed the stop button it moved across and stopped beneath the marker to show which cartridge needed changing. The I pressed the stop button again and it moved to a place where I could change it.
This happened despite the fact that the pictures I was printing blatently showed that I needed to replace my ink, it wasn't until I had printed the liney pictures a few times that the printer decided the ink level was low enough to turn the flashing light on and let me change it.

There should be a procedure for changing the cartridge and checking the manual indicates this routine:

1. Open the printer lid to give you access to the printer insides.
2. Press the "Stop" button (a picture of an reversed triangle in a circle)
3. Wait for the cartridge carriage to move into the replacement position.
4. Replace cartridges
5. Close printer lid
6. Press the "Stop" button again.

If that doesn't work you can always start the printer, wait until you hear the sound of it starting to move, pull the power cord on the back of the printer and then open it up. Hopefully the carriage should be in a position where you can move it and get to the cartridges to replace them.

I wouldn't recommend the latter approach unless you can't get the main routine to work correctly.

Lifting the lid will not move the print head on most Epson printers, they don't work the same way as say HP or Canon printers. In fact you can still print with the lid up on most Epson printers.

When ink cartridges are showing empty by the computer software, they should in fact also be showing by the printer software and so you should have a light of some sort illuminated on the printer.
The light is usually within or next to a button on the printer and it is this button you need to press to cause the print carriage to move to the change position so you can access the ink cartridges.
If you have no light on the printer then either you are only getting low warnings (yellow triangle) and the cartridge is not yet ready to be changed or it could be that you have a LCD screen on the printer in which case, you'll have the empty message there and the ability to use a Menu or Maintenance/Tool button to select cartridge replacement.
When you either press the illuminated button or select cartridge replacement on the printer menu, the carriage will move to the change position, however if it doesn't, it will be for one reason and that is simply that the printer is still busy doing something else.
This can be a variety of things:
A print job part printed
A print queue holding up the printer
A paper jam
A multitude of printer errors

The first two possibilities are easily remedied: go to Control Panel, select Printers/Faxes, double click your printer icon (e.g. SX100), click on the Printer tab and select Cancel All Documents... wait a few seconds and all pending jobs will disappear.

If you've had a paper jam, normally after you clear it, a small amount of paper sometimes gets left behind and gets shunted onto the sidewall of the printer by the carriage, which stops the carriage reaching its full travel and throwing up an error, rendering the printer unable to print or carry out any other function. Simply remove the paper and switch printer off and on and it will reset.
If you have an error of any other kind, many remedies and fixes for these can be found on my website http://www.the-inkstore.co.uk/frame/pages/epson.htm

There should be no other reason why the print carriage does not move to the change position apart from one very obvious one to me but surprisingly unknown to most people. This is when you press an ink button on the printer to move the carriage, most Epson printers have a plastic pointer on the chasis (plastic frame) where the carriage first moves to lining up on a particular cartridge colour with the pointer to tell you which cartridge needs changing, if you press the ink button again, the carriage will align another ink colour to the pointer if another needs changing, if not, the carriage will now move to the change position so that you can remove and replace the ink cartridge.

These methods above are good for 90% of Epson printers.

The difference with the new 2, 3 & 4 series printers without LCD screens, is that instead of a pointer system to tell you which cartridge needs changing, there is only a small gap for you to access the ink cartridges and only the one that needs changing will appear in that gap and obviously any others that also need changing will appear there everytime you press the ink button.

I hope this helps all Epson users that need to know how to change cartridges and why the carriage doesn't move to the correct position when expected!

Regards

How do I replace a nearly done black cartridge in my Epson SX100 it is hard to read the print

To change an empty ink cartridge on the Epson Stylus SX100, make sure that the printer is plugged in and turned on. Next lift the entire scanner unit (pull up from the center); make sure that the document cover is closed. The support arm should engage. Next press Stop (above the Copy button). The ink cartridge carrier should move so that the (first) empty cartridge moves to the spot with the droplet with a slash through it symbol. Press the tabs on the front and back of this cartridge and pull it straight up. Shake the new cartridge while it is still in the package. Then remove it from the packaging and remove the yellow tape without touching other parts of the cartridge. Slide this cartridge into the open slot and press down until you hear a click. Press Stop to advance the carrier to bring the next empty ink cartridge into the empty cartridge position. When done, lift up on the scanner unit and disengage the support arm by pushing it in towards the printer. Then lower the scanner unit. Press Stop again to get the printer to run through the maintenance step.

If you want to change the ink before the printer indicates it is out, you need to open the Epson Status monitor software. With a Windows OS, go to the Maintenance tab and find the Ink Replacement utility. Launch the utility and follow the on-screen directions and open the printer, as above. It this software isn't installed, then you need to check if the software is available for your OS. Install the software, if it is available. Please add a comment with the OS on the computer connected to the SX100 for more information.

I hope this helps.

Epson Stylus SX100/TX200 Cannot get carriage to stop in position to change a cartridge - red light is flashing

Are you using the "ink cartridge replacement" utility? To access this utility click "print" as though you were going to print a document. This should open a small window that will have check boxes that allows you to enter how many copies and what size of paper you wish to use. Also on this small window is a button that says "Properties". Click that button and another small window will open with 3 tabs across the top that say "main" "page layout" and "maintenance". Click the maintenance tab. On the maintenance tab there should be about half a dozen utilities that you can start by pressing buttons in the window and one of those utilities is called "ink cartridge replacement". Once started, this utility will give you several instructions and advise you to click "next" after completing each step. One of the steps will cause the carriage to move into a position from which you can change the cartridge. Good luck!

How to change ink cartridge on Epson SX100?

Lift the whole top section up (from under the scanner bed) and the ink cartridges will move to the centre allowing you to lift the plastic clip up and remove and replace the cartridge. DO NOt try and drag the cartridges to the right place. It should do it automatically provided the cartridges need changing. Good luck

Computer says black ink is low. Ink light is flashing on Epson Stylus NX100. When I hit stop button to begin replacement it wont move cartridge

***hi there,il be willing to help you on that. ****
1. Turn on the Epson Stylus NX100 Series.
If a cartridge is expended, the ink light on the control panel stays on. You must replace the cartridge to be able to print.
2. Open the scanner and prop it up with its support.
3. Press the Stop button. The print head moves to the position to indicate which cartridge is low or expended.
4. Press the Stop button again.
If another cartridge is low or expended, it moves to the position. Press the Stop button again to see if more cartridges are expended.
If no other cartridges are low or expended, the print head moves to the replacement position on the right.
5. Squeeze the tab on the cartridge and lift the cartridge straight up to remove it. Dispose of it carefully. Do not take the used cartridge apart or try to refill it.
6. Before opening the new cartridge package, shake it four or five times. (Do not shake a cartridge after opening the package; ink may leak.)
7. Remove the cartridge from the package, but be careful not to touch the green chip on the cartridge.
8. Remove the yellow tape from the bottom of the cartridge.
9. Insert the new cartridge into the holder and push it down until it clicks into place
10. Once you replace all the necessary cartridges, lift the scanner slightly, release its support, and lower the scanner
11. Press the Stop button to begin charging the ink. This takes about 1 1/2 minutes.
When the On light stops flashing and remains on, ink charging is finished.
Caution:
Never turn off the Epson Stylus NX100 Series while ink is charging or you’ll waste ink.
If the ink light flashes, press the Stop button and press down all the cartridges securely.

***if my troubleshooting steps are helpful, pls vote for me, i will appreciate it, so that I can be a part of fixya, thanks, Godbless****

I need to change the ink cartridges on epson stylus sx200 but i need help as instruction book doesntreally tellyou how-thanks

buy an ink cartridge made specifically for your printer. Turn on your printer and raise the lid or press the cartridge changing button. 3 Wait for the cartridge carrier to slide out. with an Epson printer, lift the cartridge holder lid, and the cartridge will pop up for removal. Carefully remove the tape from the ink opening on the bottom of new cartridge. Insert the new cartridge into the cartridge carrier. Make sure the new cartridge is oriented the same way that the old cartridge had been. 7 Feel and hear the cartridge click into position. On some models, arrows will indicate the cartridge is correctly positioned. with an Epson printer close the cartridge holder lid and press the cleaning button to charge the cartridge. Close printer cover.
