The machine probably uses a plug like the ones used on computers. It is a smaller plug, like a rectangle with two of the corners tapered. A regular extension cord will not work. Take it back, and look for a power cord for a computer. Take a picture of the plug on the machine you are trying to use before you go to the store. The clerk should be able to help you find the right cord.
Yes you can. Just make sure that the plugs are not in a position where they can be kicked or trodden upon and that the cord itself will not trip people. Also make sure that the wire gauge of the extension is at least a little thicker than the shredder original cord. (Use a plugged extension cord, do not attempt a wire joint).
