Question about Western Digital External USB 2.0 80 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Serious Trouble!!! I am a music recorder and i have a western digital external hard drive. I have music files on my computer that are not showing up now, after i added my latest song to my hard drive. I have over 100 songs in this hard drive. The driver was titled Blokwatch, but now when i plug it up, all it is saying is "Local Disk (E:)." Nothing is showing up, and i can't open any existing files. I really need someones help, because my life is on this hard drive. When i click on the drive, it keeps saying that i need to format the disk, but i was using the hard drive previously, and this problem never accurd. Can someone please help me

I have been using WD external hard drive for I guess about a year. I used it to store my pictures and music on to free up space on my desktop. I loaded pictures of it on Sunday and on Tuesday I was moving files from it to my desktop for easy download to the internet. Now the desktop will not recognize the drive and I'm unable to view any pictures at all. It asks if I want to format, which of course I don't, it has my pictures on it. Help please!!! Anyone...

Your WD HDD have been attacted by viruses for your computer or outside computer where you used it last. Make sure that you have an up to date antivirus software, scan your computer or the external hard drive, explore your computer, go to tools - folder options under view files & folders select show hidden files and folders apply and ok it.

Unit downloaded fine ad the did the back up of the drive fine.started the updates and the firmware stopped and then the drive locked up how to access the drive again after reboot nothing shows G: F:

  1. To restore the Western Digital icon to the drive letter for the external drive in "My Computer".
  2. Please go to the Western Digital Download Library and download the WD Logo Icon which has a file name of External Icon.zip when you download it.
  3. Save the file to your desktop and use a file compression software like Winzip to extract the files inside the .zip file to your desktop. When it's unzipped, it will create a folder named "ExternalIcon" on your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ExternalIcon folder. It will open a Windows Explorer showing a folder named, Autorun, and a file named, Autorun.inf.Double-click on My Computer and it will open.
  5. Double-click on the driver letter that represents the Western Digital drive you want the icon on and it will open.
  6. Highlight the Autorun folder and the Autorun.inf file. Right-click on them, and left-click on Cut when the Menu appears.
  7. Right-click in the open space of the drive that you opened in the new Explorer window, and then left-click on Paste.
  8. Close both Explorer windows, safely remove the external hard drive by using the Safely Remove icon in the system tray, shut down the computer, and unplug the external drive from the computer.
  9. After you reboot into Windows, reconnect the external drive to the computer again, and the Western Digital Icon should now be displayed with the drive letter in My Computer.

If these steps do not correct the problem, you will need to re-format your External Hard Drive ***WARNING*** FORMATTING A HARD DRIVE WILL ERASE, YOU WILL LOSE, ALL DATA

I have an i mac and windows 7 laptop.......the laptop is brand new and i want to transfer all my music and movies from my mac......can this be done and if so how???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

> transfer from Mac to PC ... how ?

Several ways:

* use Ethernet cables to connect the network-port on each computer to a "router" (one of those boxes that "splits" your Internet signal, and might provide "wireless" access inside your home), and then enable "file-sharing" on both computers.
Then, the computers can "talk" to each other, via the router.

* write all the files to an external storage device, e.g., USB memory-stick or Western Digital Passport device. Move the device to the other computer, and copy from the device onto the computer.

* "burn" all the files to CD-recordable or DVD-recordable disks.
Move the disks to the new computer.

Cannot locate files on WD3200P032

Sounds like the drive is dying. In Vista to to the start button and type in music then right above click "search everywhere". It will bring up the search window. Click "include non-indexed, hidden & system files". Hit the down arrow for location and select your external drive. Then at the top under "show only" click music. Then do the same for "pictures" That will do a full search on your drive for each of them. Then get them off fast. XP and before have a little different searches. Go to Start click on search. Go to advanced. I think it had a selection to search for music & pictures files but not sure. Just make sure it is searching in your ext. drive. If it doesn't have those enter into the search bar, "*.bmp", "*.jpg" for pictures. For music use "*.mp3", & "*.wma"

I want to back up my hard drive to an external hard drive(Western my book 320G)I do not wish to purchase their auto back-up program. Can this be accomplished?

Yes it can,. Your external HDD will show up in "my Computer" as another drive. You can transfer files simply using copy and paste. (or edit -> copy files to folder) which I advise. Bear in mind that hidden, and read only files will not be copied. These files include the mailboxes in Outlook Express. So be careful. I advise making copies of all files of this kind, first.

Western digital external hard drive showing empty folder

Hi Elizabethfam

If not removed safely, external devices can lose information when disconnected.

I recommend using a free recovery tool called Handy Recovery which is normally used to recover files accidentally files on a PC. The application can also be used to try and recover files on your external HD.

Handy recovery: http://www.handyrecovery.com/download.shtml (look for the small button near the bottom that says 'Freeware')

Good luck!
