yes that is very possible. cleaning the lens of the dvd player should happen atleast once a month. it can also be that the lens itself is scratched or the lase does not reach the disk tracks due to dust or bad handling

what you should do is to clean the OPTICAL LENS directly with a dry Q-tip , could be that it collected some dust and thats why its playing erratically, give it a try , AJ

I got it work work with mine. Here's how: I removed the top cover and put in a disk to see what happens. I realized it had to be a motor problem because the dvd player was having trouble spinning the disk. I removed the part that had the motor and sprayed some air into it to clean it. It works perfectly now!!

This is a Laser Pickup Assembly issue, the pladder motor that the dvd sits on is not working and has become defective, the only solution is replaced the machine for a new one, not cost effective for repair.
Try using VLC as your player. Go to www.google.com and in the search box type "download vlc" (without the quotes). Look for the Video Lan download from site www.videolan.org/vlc Download and install it. It downloads and installs in 3 minutes or so. It's a very fast player, smooth and it can play just about any type of dvd formats and media. It's totally FREE.
