How to replace a chain with master link on a Schwinn Airdyne

Airdyne Chain Replacement with Master link

This video will demonstrate how to replace the chain with master link on a Schwinn Airdyne.
  • First remove the cotter pin and clevis pin from the user's right handlebar. Then lower the connecting arm and handlebar.
Caution: be sure to hold the handlebar as it will come loose after removal of the above parts.
  • Remove the connecting arm and pedal and crank arm by removing the wedge pin. To simplify this process loosen the nut and tap on it with a small hammer until the pin is loosened.
  • Remove the nut, wedge pin, crank arm and connecting arm.
  • Next remove the chain guard; there are three screws attaching it as shown in the video.
  • Remove the chain by locating the master link. Remove the lock pin and the cover, and then disconnect the chain.
  • Place the new chain on the sprockets as shown in the video.
  • Install the master link, cover and lock.
  • Re-install the chain guard and attaching screws.
  • Re-assemble the connecting arm to the handlebar and eccentric.
  • Be sure the brass bushing is installed in the front inner side of the connecting arm before installing the clevis pin and cotter pin.
  • Install the crank arm with pedal.
Be sure when completing this step that the crank arm is installed in the opposite position as the users left side crank arm.
  • Install the nut onto the wedge pin and tighten.
  • This completes the procedure.

Length of 18-speed bicycle chain?

This varies from model to model.
Check that with the largest rear sprocket, and the largest front sprocket that the derailleur lower arm is not pointing straight forward, and smallest front and rear sprockets selected that the the derailleur is not all of the way back, and the chain is loose (Hanging slackly)
The new chain will come with links to spare, and you will have to cut it.

I had to take off the rear weel of my falcon apache mountain bike to get it in my car o travel from my grandparens home to mine but i cant get the back weel gear arm back on. how do i do this??

By the "gear arm" I assume you mean that part of the rear derailer that the chain zig-zags through. This arm moves in two ways. It moves in and out (toward the wheel and away) as you move the shift lever - which is how it changes gears, by moving the chain onto different sprockets (gears). It also moves forward and back (toward the front and back of the bike) under spring pressure. This forward and back motion is necessary to take up the slack in the chain when you are using the smaller sprockets (the smaller the sprocket, the "higher" the gear). When the wheel has been removed, this arm moves forward (under spring pressure) as far as it can to take up all of the slack in the chain. All you have to do is grasp this lever and pull it toward the back of the bike, allowing the lever and the chain to pass behind the sprockets (gears) as you pull the wheel back into it's position. You can safely pull this arm forward and back at any time without doing any damage. One more tip-- I find it a little easier if you first put the shift lever in a "middle" gear position. Then when you pull the wheel into place, you should aim to put the chain on a middle sprocket. You don't have to hit the exact correct sprocket as you can simply lift the rear wheel and turn the pedals forward (after installing the wheel) and the chain will move to the correct sprocket corresponding to the setting on the shift lever.
Good luck! Please vote if you found this helpful. Al K

We have an 18" boys huffy bike and the chain keeps falling off. How can I repair.

If a single speed bike loosen the rear wheel and pull it back away from the pedals to get the chain tighter

If it has multi gears the arm hanging down has a ser screw that will need to be adjusted to align the chain to stop at the last gear

How to u put chain on r6

If the chain has a master link, then you can just loosen the rear axle and let the chain tension adjustment all the way in. Then wrap the chain around both sprockets and install the connecting link. After this retighten the chain. For a chain without a master link( endless chain) you will have to remove the swing arm to allow you to get the chain on the front sprocket. After reinstalling the swing arm, and rear wheel you can adjust the chain tension and then tighten the rear axle.
