I think i have resolved this problem, the chassis intrusion switch is NC by default and opens when side panel is put on thus disconnecting the override to case fan. I think this was faulty, I physically split the wires going to this switch ans insulted them so override is not activated , seems to be working fine now

You may also want to remove the CPU heat sink and apply more thermal paste to prevent any overheating. You can buy the paste from radio shack for about $10. Arctic Silver 5 is the best stuff.

SOURCE: pc shuts down ,reason cpu overheating

Since you have cleaned the inside thoroughly, could be a capacitor problem - replace capacitors.

It's also possible that there is a bad thermal contact between the NorthBridge chip and it's heatsink. That's the chip/heatsink combo immediately below the processor. Just remove the spring clip that holds the heatsink in place. Use a toothbrush and a good solvent such as denatured alcohol to remove the thermal pad and associated heatsink compound from the heatsink. Then remove all residual heatsink compound from the chip itself. Once everything is very clean, apply a VERY THIN coat of new heatsink compound to the top of the chip AND the bottom area of the heatsink where it comes into contact with the chip.

If this doesn't do the trick, you probably have a bad motherboard.

SOURCE: my dell precision 390 keeps freezing

Please restart the computer and while it is booting enter into safe mode by pressing f8 repeatedly. It will eventually it will ask you to enter safe mode. Enter safe mode option(not with networking or anything else) log back in. See if the computer freezes at this point. If it does not freeze after being on for an extended period it is more then likely a bad windows install or a virus. If it does the same thing we could be talking hard ware issues.

How reset dell precision bios?

You need to find the jumper's located on the motherboard. You can lookup your specific info on http://support.dell.com/ if you know the Service tag, which can be found on the top of the tower.

Check in the BIOS to see if it's on AUTO or Manual... if it's Auto or low at setting in the manual then put it full or 100%...

My dell computer keeps shutting down every 5 min or so. I cleaned th fan and still the problem happens. I bought this almost 4 and a half years ago.

You may have cleaned the fan but have you cleaned the metal cooler (heat sink) under the fan? Its better to remove the fan from the heat sink and hoover it out, then refit the clean fan. Also hoover out the power supply vents too. Also make sure any case vents are clear too. If you think overheating is the problem then run the pc with the case open and if it runs ok then overheating is the problem.

Check your BIOS settings to see if "smart fan" settings are enabled or disabled.

If they are disabled, your fan will run at max speed all the time.

Once enabled, the fan should only speed up as your cpu heats up, and then turn itself down once a lower temperature is reached.
