Certain models of Stihl equipment have a vented fuel tanks, ive recently had 2 in for repair with similar symptoms, but also showed signs of fuel soaked air filter. The fuel tank vents have a delicate little valve in them which have a tendency to perish/break causing fuel to flow back up the breather pipe.

They were stored hanging on a rack with the engines down, which i done suppose helps. I'd advise to stoe flat or if hanging,'engine's up'.

SOURCE: hedgetrimmer is not starting easily and when

  • might pay to check sounds like the unit has a air leak

either at carb gasket , manifold block or intake boot or impulse hose or base gasket or crankcase seals particularly if carby is good and compression and spark are good and muffler is clear and fuel lines and breather and fuel filter are all ok

symptoms of air leak are - hard to start, inconsistant idle
ineffective carb adjustments - stalling , no power , rough running- over revving

this might pay to have done at local service shop unless you have poper tools to block off ports and pressure and vacuum test unit ?

cheers paul46 hope it helps

Have oc60 diesel eng runs for a while then drops in revs sometime picks back up somtimes stalls then restart

Possible low coolant in AC unit. Sounds like the comressor (A/C) is putting a load on the engine when the the coolant is returning to be compressed after it becomes saturated. Possible air dryer or A/C condensor problem, also.

My br420c blower runs fine for about 20 seconds and then shuts off like the switch has been turned off

possibility 1) It sounds like it is sucking air with the gasoline. 2) don't rush the choke, leave it running on high with 1/2 choke. When you go to move the choke to off, move it very very slowly while the governor can catch up and raise the revs. Or slow the revs down before turning the choke off.

Hello, I have a stihl hs60/61 hedgetrimmer, with carb wt-189b. My problem is: It can start maybee for 5sec and sometimes I can rev it up. But after it dies and try again it wont start? I have cleaned...

Your plug you say is getting wet so fuel is getting into the cylinder, Maybe its just a fuel air mix preventing it from firing. Screw both the H&L screws in all the way then turn them out anticlockwise to the following settings. H 1 full turn out, L 3/4 of a turn out. This should be set back to standard settings. Also check the fuel line for any holes and also make sure fuel doesnt leak out the fuel tank vent.

Stihl FS85 starts fine, But not take full throttle

Pumping the primer bubble while the engine is running should cause the engine to over fuel and stall (if the tuning is correct). Sounds like its not fueling enough, pumping the primer is forcing fuel through the carb causing the engine to pick up rev's, but this is soon exhausted which is why it wont rev on the throttle.
* Check that the fuel line is not damaged and drawing in air. (if this is intact try the next step)
* Strip and clean the carb. Replace any diaphrams if needed.
* Check gaskets seal between carb, air filter and cylinder.

Just out of curiosity what standard carb settings did you use.?

check gas cap! maybe there is a weak spot in ''crank case gasket'' and when it gets real hot it opens up and loses vacuum.... that's highly unlikely, but I've seen worse.... sounds like you need your thinking cap for this 1! good luck

I have a new Stihl FS90R Trimmer...Idles fine but dies when given gas to rev up. Tried to adjust the carb out. Did not help. I have two of these.Changed the carbs and the same thing happened. The same carb...

My nephew had a problem with his Stihl FS55R trimmer, sez it would run on high for a few then quit. Sez it restarts easy and runs on idle with no problem. I pulled carb & found fuel screen full of fine contaminant. This is the screen you see when you drop the bottom pan of the carb. (single screw does it). Reassembled and the trimmer runs on high speed w/o problems. If your primer bulb doesn't pop right back up when you punch it down, it means that the fuel can't get past that screen....

Are you sure your idle ports ( size of pinhole) in carb aren't plugged with something? What happens if it starts to die, and you give it a quick squirt of WD-40 , down throat of carb?
