Question about Acer Aspire 5742 Notebook

1 Answer

Touchpad not fully functioning

I have an Acer 5742 laptop purchased in May 2011. All of a sudden a few days ago, the multi-gesture touchpad lost some of its functions, namely the 'swipe page setting' which allows you to scroll back to previously viewed webpages instead of having to tap on the back button at the top left of the screen. Also, the 'rotation' and 'zooming' functions no longer work although when you try to perform these tasks, the pointer does change as if it is about to perform these tasks, although nothing actually happens. I have gone onto the control Panel and looked at the Elan Smart Pad multi-finger settings to check that these functions are enabled and they are. I even restored the default settings to make sure of this. Does anyone know what might be wrong.

Try and attach a USB mouse. Then uninstall the driver. restart your computer and reinstall the driver. Also clean with some spray to make sure there is no dirt which is causing the problem.

Thanks

SOURCE: My touchpad will not respond when I tap it

On the bottom bar by the clock, if your computer is newer there should be a small icon that controls your mouse. Simply right click on it and check the box "tap to click" or similar. Hope this helps!

Thank you.

What is multi gesture

do you mean multi-touch? It means that the device (touchpad or touch screen) can sense multiple fingers simultaneously.
gestures are specific patterns that perform tasks (like 2 finger scroll, pinch to zoom).

I am quite sure your trackpad supports multi-touch. If they arent enabled you can change the settings. For windows, go to - control panel> mouse>device settings tab> settings. (this might slightly change depending on the driver you have.)

Multi gesturee touchpad wont work

First advice with windows is "try restarting the PC", though very common advice .. its like magic which works with many of the troubleshooting issues.
Second thing you can do is try installing the touchpad drivers (like synaptics in my case) and look for the latest one as old drivers don't support multi gestures.
Hope this helps you in resolving you problem.
Have a good day bye

What is the multi gesture option available on my acer aspire timeline 4820tg and how do i switch it on or off . plz help me regarding this. regards ankit

The 4820TG's multi-gesture touchpad executes two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom and rotate functions very well. The touchpad is a huge improvement from previous Acer touchpads. The touchpad is large and very responsive. The single touchpad button is comfortable to use and gentle to press. Multi-touch gestures and scrolling works well while surfing the Internet. Nevertheless, it is highly recommended to lower the sensitivity for "PalmCheck" in the Synaptics software to enable usage of the keyboard and touchpad at the same time. Enable/Disable and other touchpad settings can be made using Mouse Properties (from contril panel) and Synaptics Tab.

GoodLuck!
Dont forget to appreciate the solution if I could have been of any help!

My touchpad works but not its multi gesture its emachines D730

most touchpad drivers will work on windows 7 but the program which control the functionality of the touchpad "Synaptics" or ALPS" pointing device may not be compatible in win7 this is an issue with most computer manufacturers but not their fault since win7 is a new operating system and possibly in the near future who knows when windows will come with a windows update to make touchpads work in windows having all it's functionality available.

try calling your computers maker and ask if they have work arounds for your touchpad some may have options to make all your touchpads functionality work but some may not try calling them and have them check it for you, they should know better since they are trained for the specifics of your system.^_^

I can't kill the zoom feature on my Acer Laptop. It is a pain.

Go to Control Panel > Mouse > Device Settings > Settings > Advanced Gestures > Pinch

(or alternatively right-click the Synaptics Pointing Device icon in your taskbar and select Pointing Device Properties)

Untick the box that says 'Enable Pinch'. This will disable the zooming.

Additionally, you might be suffering the same problem as I was which was I had no idea how to use the zoom and that's why I wanted to lock it. Having Google stuck on too-big-to-navigate-properly or too-small-to-read for days at a time prompted me to learn. I've since decided the zoom is useful and I'm keeping the feature enabled.

Here is what Synaptics have to say about the 'pinch' gesture:
The Pinch gesture delivers zooming functionality in many applications. The Pinch gesture can be used to perform the same function as a scroll wheel on standard Windows applications that support CTRL-SCROLL WHEEL zoom functionality.

To perform a pinch gesture, place two fingers on the TouchPad surface. Move them closer together or further apart. To zoom in, place your fingers on the TouchPad surface near to each other and then slide them apart. To zoom out, begin by placing your fingers apart and then moving them closer together.

The best zooming experience results when the finger tips of the two fingers are used for the gesture.

That will hopefully be of assistance if you want to learn how to use the zoom rather than disable it. It took some practice but I can do it now without a problem so can fix windows when I accidentally zoom on them.
