Could it be the lazer?

SOURCE: system freezes
Firstly, just out of interest, in the Settings menu, do this if using HDMI: BD/DVD-->HDMI 1080p 24mhz...this will be set to 'Automatic'...change it to 'Off'. Now try to play your Blue Ray disk. If not, it seems that your blue ray system is overheating, and the system is not giving it enough cooling allowance. I had the same problem. I called Sony support UK up and explained to them that I had a "blue ray laser failure", and if your PS3 is in warrenty, they send a courier to your door and replace it for FREE. They take your old one off you. I got my new one within a week just.

the laser is starting to go bad in the dvd drive. It takes more power for the drives laser to read and play a blu ray movie then it does to play a dvd game.
You can either replace the laser if you have the technical knowledge to take the dvd drive apart, or just replace the drive. You can usually find either one on ebay.

it could be a hard drive problem or if the PS3 is in an enclosed cabnit it could be a sign of over heating
