most dishwashers use hot water to obtain a clean finish for the utensils
You could use cold water but I think that any grease would not be dissolved properly from off the plates leaving plates and glasses with streaks and a greasy feeling

What is a Laboratory Hot Plate?

Wikipedia says: A hot plate is a portable self-contained tabletop small appliance that features one, two or more gas burners or electric heating elements. A hot plate can be used as a stand alone appliance, but is often used as a substitute for one of the burners from an oven range or the cook top of a stove. Hot plates are often used for food preparation, generally in locations where a full kitchen stove would not be convenient or practical, as hot plates are easily moved from one location to another.

Plate getting too hot

I don;t think your plate is micorwave safe. Put the plate and a glass measuring cup with water in the microwave for 1 minute, if the plate is hot and the water is not the plate is not microwave safe. IF the water is hot and the plate is not. I don't know what the problem is

Hot surface light

across each plate there is a cutout - you can usually see it thro the ceramic and is a rod going across the plate. it also senses that the plate is hot and turns the hobhot light on. this is the part that is faulty. sometimes only available as a complete plate
