Question about Kenmore 50522 / 50524 Side by Side Refrigerator
Our freezer side is not working again. We had it worked on 6 months ago, and the repair man said this is typical of this model. I can't find the paperwork to get the part info, so we can order it and do it our selves. Can you see what the common problem is for this model? Thanks, Diane
The best way to solve this is to email me the models number found near bottom of the fresh food compartment door. Sears problems are difficult to solve. There are several things that could be causing this. Your compressor could be going bad. Your freon is low. Think of your refrigerator as a air conditioner. Pull it out and vacuum all the dust from your filters, make sure the water is draining properly and not clogged up. Is your unit still under warranty. How old is your unit. Try this. Unplug the unit for about 5-10 minutes, this will give it enough time for the compressor to cool down. Plug it back in and listen for the compressor to kick on. That's the big black round thing at the bottom in the back of your refrigerator. Listen to it and what the sound is, does it click when it turns on, does it shudder when it turns on. Let me know the sound. By unplugging the unit and doing this the compressor should kick on in 1-3 minutes after plugging it back in. If your unit is over 8 years old you might consider another one. Check out craigslist, as you can get some great deals. Let me know if I can help you further.

Depending on the age of your refrigerator and cost of replacement parts I think right now would be a good time to decide what you will do. I have a feeling that the problem is related to the main control board inside the fresh food compartment, part number 2313180. It's over priced and if you need to pay someone to put it in I believe you could buy a less expensive refrigerator without electronics and have just a simple defrost timer and it would last longer. My answer is not a fix it's bad news that anyone would put a price on a part like that and expect the consumers to be happy about it, Sea Breeze

It is possible the defrost control failed. If so, it would still be in warranty.
However, the most common part to fail, is the defrost thermostat which is located behind the rear panel, in the freezer compartment.
It is a small round disc about 1" in diameter, mounted to the top of the cooling coil.
It can be tested, with an ohm meter, but must be tested before it can warm to above 30 degrees. It should read zero ohms of resistance.
Rarely, as well, the main heater which is mounted to the bottom of the coil can fail. It's a calrod unit somewhat like the bake element of an electric range. Unplug it, and check the continuity with an ohm meter. It should test out in the 25 to 50 ohms range.
If both check O.K. then the timer has failed, and needs replaced.
