You didn't specify the make and model of your camera so I'm assuming it uses a memory card of some type.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa.

I opened my X018 Camera package and there wasn't any software or instruction book included. Please help. drypete@aol.com

-Using the USB cable that came with the camera, connect the wider end of the cable to your computer and the smaller end to your camera, on the left side.
-Power on the camera. After a few seconds a new window will appear on the computer screen. The new window allows you to use the Scanner & Camera wizard to move your pictures to the computer. Select the wizard and follow it's steps to approve the new location for your pictures and then proceed.
If you don't have the USB cable, remove the memory card from the bottom of the camera and find the part of your computer labeled Media Cards. Insert your memory card into the slot labeled SD. After a few seconds a new window will appear on the computer screen. The new window allows you to use the Scanner & Camera wizard to move your pictures to the computer. Select the wizard and follow it's steps to approve the new location for your pictures and then proceed.

How do i view stored pictures

Hi,

Thanks for contacting FixYa for your problem.

In order to view pictures stored in your Camera. Please do the following:

  1. Plug the one side (usually small) USB cable into your Camera and other side into your Computer USB Port.
  2. Once connected, you need to ON your camera.
  3. Once ON your computer will detect it and may be you will get option on your Camera about the mode to chose, so chose Disk Storage.
  4. Once you select the mode your computer will automatically detect and will install the required Drivers for it.
After Drivers Are Installed:

After drivers are installed, do the following:

  1. Go to My Computer.
  2. Locate for any new drive (usually Memory drive, or may be a new drive will appear other than your normal drive partitions i.e. C, D, E...). This will contain all the date in your camera.
  3. Simply double click that drive and look for the folders for your pictures.
  4. You can simply copy and paste them to your computer or cut them or delete them without any problem as per your needs.
I hope this will help you all, if not, then do let me know I will assist you in this regard further.

Kind Regards,

Khawar Khalid

My computer recognize the cam but nothing comes up on my screen?

When the new device pops up, it should tell you if it installed the device and if the device is working. If it did, the it should be listed in Windows Explorer similar to a disk drive. If it is there and you click on it the the right side of Windows Explorer should display the camera view.
If there is no camera in Windows Explorer, then go to control panel and see if you can find it there. Depending on your Windows, look under Imaging Devices, Devices and Printers Camera & Scanners.... If there is no listing for it, the driver did not install. Locate the driver for the camera and install it.

I dont know who to put the pics on the computer

Putting your pictures on you computer can be done in a couple of ways.

1. You can connect the camera to the computer, using the supplied cable, and then turn on the power to the camera. Your computer should detect the new camera device, and within 'Windows Explorer', you should 'see' your camera as a new device, which you can click on to view / manage your new pictures from there.

2. You could remove the memory card from the camera, and place it in the memory card reader of your computer, or alternatively purchase an inexpensive adapter to read memory cards, which would then connect to an available USB port on your computer.

The advantage of the second option is that you don't need the camera present, nor need a camera powered on during viewing.

Hope this information helps,

Erik.

Troubleshooting Steps for Windows USB connection issues

It can sometimes be difficult to setup a digital camera on a new computer. Usually the process is simple: plug the camera in, allow the system to install the driver and begin using the system, however, sometimes things can go wrong. Following these steps can solve more than 90% of problems relating to USB connection issues. You must be thorough and follow it step-by-step. What CF Card is installed in the camera? A large number of problems are caused by incompatible CF Cards. In many cases these cards will work while shooting but can fail to properly download to the computer. You must be extra careful that the card is approved. Actually look up the card you are using in the manual to see if it on the list. Many retailers include "Unapproved" cards in their bundles, so just because a card came with the camera doesn't mean that it is "Approved". If in doubt, use the "Nikon Starter Card" for testing. Is the Camera in Mass Storage Mode? While PTP mode can be used if your camera and operating system (Mac OS X and Windows XP) supports it, for troubleshooting it may be useful to switch to MSC USB mode using the camera's setup menus. Are there images on the card that can be viewed on the camera in playback mode? Nikon View will not auto launch or give a transfer window with no images on the flash card. If you have covered the first three items you should now connect the camera to the rear USB port (not through a hub or front port) on the computer. On all Windows systems excluding Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) ("Plain" Windows 98 is not supported.) make sure the Nikon View CDROM has been removed from the system prior to connecting the camera. Does the LCD Display Screen go dark after being connected for 2 seconds? If you are not getting the "Found New Hardware" wizard then check the LCD display. If the display stays "on" and the camera seems to be in Shooting mode or Playback mode then you may have a bad cable, camera USB port or computer USB port. If this is the case, contact Nikon Support for more information or Click Here for more troubleshooting. Does "New Hardware Wizard" Start? If you connect the Camera and a "Found New Hardware" wizard comes up you should allow the system to auto search for the driver by simply clicking the "Next" button until it is finished. (Windows 98SE requires the Nikon View CD-ROM to be in the CD-drive at this point.) On Windows systems newer than Windows 98SE the camera should pick up and use the Microsoft Mass Storage driver. "Hardware Handshaking" You need to understand how hardware handshaking works. The hardware Handshake occurs when a USB device is connected to the USB port. The computer detects the USB device on the USB bus and asks: "What are you?" The Coolpix line of cameras should answer: "I am a Nikon Coolpix 5700 currently set to Mass storage mode." If the computer does not understand this message the most likely cause is an incompatibility with the USB chipset on the partic
