What is the difference between a sewing machine and a serger?

Well..... A serger (or overlock) sews a different, and usually more complex stitch. Where a sewing machine usually only uses two threads to make the stitch, a serger can use two, three, four or even five threads and will sew around the edges of the work piece, as well as trimming the edge of the work just ahead of the sewing area, or as you feed the work in, the trimming takes place first. Sergers also make a stronger seam, attributable to more thread / stitching in the seam. Sergers are versatile and quick, but one drawback is the fact that sergers make a chain stitch instead of a lock stitch, like a machine with a bobbin, and lock stitches can be pulled out, like the stitching that used to close dog food bags and bags of charcoal. A lock stitch is just what it sounds like, it can't be pulled out. You only get a lock stitch with a machine that uses a bobbin, and sergers don't use bobbins. That fact makes serging desirable for the speed of production. Changing bobbins takes up a lot of time, even if you are using pre-wounds. Hope this helps!

I have a Tacsew T20U73-1 straight stitch/ zig-zag machine and I am wondering how I go about making my machine go from zig-zag to straight stitch?

There has got to be a selector of some kind on the machine. Usually it will be marked with symbols indicating straight or zig-zag stitch. You may also try varying the width of the stitch. The wider the stitch, the more pronounced the zig-zag effect.

I have been lent a Philips Baby Monitor 0682 without a manual and don't know how to work it. Can I access a manual on line, if so How, or do I have to buy one,if so How? Grateful your advice, John...

Hi John.

0682 did not correspond to any known Philips baby monitor model...at least nothing came up in Philips support database. I published below the manuals for different Philips baby monitors. Please check if any of them corresponds to your series.

Philips SBCS369

Philips SBCSC469

Here a list comprising the manuals for most Philips baby monitors models.

Just purchased a used Babylock Companion 200 sewing machine; looking for a user's manual.

I just purchased one from from shop in McDonough, GA called Scarlet Thread. The are Baby Lock dealers and were able to get one for me. It took about 3 weeks but was only $6.99.
By the way, you bought an excellent machine that's super durable!

I have a Baby Lock Serger Model BL4-605 Serger and can't find the Instruction Manual. Where can I find one? Also, I need a threading guide now, can you help?

I actually have the same model. I have the manual, but it is not very helpful. It does give instructions on treading, but not much else. You can download this manual online and it will cost at least $10.00.
