Once fully charged, it will last for about 4 hours, if it is used without shutting down. The good thing is that it comes with a rechargeable lithium ion battery. That can be recharged once it is weak. I will strongly advice that you do not allow the battery run down completely before recharging as the battery might become weak and unable to hold a charge. So do not let your gps die before recharging. you can charge once it is low.
the manufacturer is the only place to get the updates, many GPS's like yours never issue any map updates, they are entry level units and they figure you will upgrade to a more expensive unit like the high end Garmin 350 (just an example)
Ahh, the notorious battery problem. I had (2) units that would not charge or turn on (red light just kept flashing). I opened the unit and disconnected the battery on (1) and completely removed the leaking battery on the other since I could not find replacements batteries. The units work fine now when plugged in (AC or DC adapter of course !). Still looking for a replacement battery...
