Dell Latitude 8100 Black screen after windows XP boot up

I just bought this Latitude 8100 off EBay. It is refurbished. The first week I had it, it worked great and I was very pleased. Now, the monitor goes black at random. Sometimes I could move the monitor up and down and it would come back. Sometimes I could barely close the monitor and mess with the mouse and it would come on. Today it worked great and did it only once. I turned it off when I went somewhere and now cant get the screen on at all. The only thing different after the first week was updating Windows. Did this do anything? I can boot in safe mode and the monitor works fine. I am a novice, so please any advice use "computer fixing for dummies" Thank you for any help

Thanks byteguy. I just bought a square trade warranty. Do you think this will void this-ie should I just send it to them, or do you think I could try without voiding anything?

One more comment. I just downloaded the manual. Where does it tell me how to tighten the video cable. I saw the memory, hard drive, etc. Thanks again

Where do you look to tighten them. What part do you take apart. Thanks

This sounds like the video cable might be loose. Unfortunately, this means partially disassembling the computer to fix it.
This is not really hard to do--and unless there is a warranty with the machine, I think you'll have to do it. I'll give you the link to help you with the task. I'm thinking this is a Latitude 810, not 8100.

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/manuals?~ck=ln&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen

Just download the manual and it will show you how to do it.

If you have a warranty, then I would definitely pursue that first. If you paid for it, by all means use it.
As for tighten the monitor cables, I mean check to be sure they are plugged in tightly. Another possible problem could be where the cables bend (they have to bend to open and close the case). Check to be sure they haven't become pinched.

As an aside--unless you mess it up, chances are the warranty people will never know you tried the repair yourself--but that is only my humble opinion!

I sent you the link for the manual--so look there for how to take off the hinge cover and the keyboard. The main connection will probably be just under the keyboard.
The other connection is on the screen (actually, it's behind the screen). so you gotta take the screen off of the computer. There will be little round inserts on the face of the plastic piece around the screen. Take them out (I use a dental too--be careful with them and you can replace them). Pry apart the two plastic pieces that comprise the computer lid and you will find 4 or 6 screws that hold in the LCD screen (2-3 on each side). Unscrew them and you'll be able to lift the screen out. The video cable is plugged into the back. Be sure it's secure.

    Good luck.

How to fix a dell inspiron 8100 boot. When i tryed to boot frome a driver cd that was not for my computer i tryed to boot frome it but would not boot so i turned it off and tryed to boot frome my hard drive...

Hi ethandown,

From my experience, you most likely have a corrupted hard drive which has affected your Windows Installation. Your only option may be to boot from a Windows XP cd.

-When your computer starts, press F2, sometimes delete to enter the system options and change the boot-up priority device to cd/dvd 9(1st).

- Restart the computer putting your windows xp setup cd inside. It will ask you to press a button to run from the cd.

- follow instructions and when on the blue screen, use the repair windows installation.

-if that doesnt work, you may have to reinstall windows however your old files will still be on the hard drive.

Hope this helps,

kc

When i turn my computer dell latitude d620 on it comes to the dell screen then the windows xp screen and then it goes black with nothing more than the mouse. what could be the problem?

This sounds like a video issue. Try starting the system into safe mode (after the dell screen, tap F8 to get the startup menu and then select safe mode) When in safe mode, go to the control panel and remove the display adapter driver from the device manager under System > hardware tab. Try booting into normal mode windows- you should be able to get into windows at that point. Download and reinstall the graphics driver from support.dell.com. If the issue reoccurs after you've reinstalled the graphics driver, it means that the video card on your system has gone out. At that point, contact Dell technical support if you are in warranty to get service- if not, try pricing the replacement video card from Ebay or Dell parts service.

Booting up

First , I would visulally check the fans and heat sink fins... see if they are Dusty, clean them if needed... then try booting to an external video source, like a Desktop Monitor.. Connect it to your laptops serial port then press the Function Key and F5..to see if your video card is ok...
