Question about Air Conditioners

Should gas pak fan run on med hi during heating

Tappan gas pack 4 ton installed 2002. One evening the house got cold and had to call a repairman. He simply sucked on the hose to the diaphram and everything started up. He switched the fan speed to med high saying that it should be operating at a higher speed. All is going well now. What type of filter should I use. Some say that don't use pleated filters because of air restrictions. Your suggestion.

Thanks for your question,
As far as what speed to run your unit, the speed should be around med, now as far as what type of filter for your system, a pleated style filter will keep the dust level down alot better than media or horse hair, these two do work but let alot of dust through, yes pleated will cause a little more air restriction, but not to the point of causing your unit to run badly, but here is the trick, you must change your filter monthly, no exceptions, to maintain the best efficancy, to lower your power bills, a clean filter is the best preventitive measure you can do for your system, now there are washable style filters on the market, they work great, all you have to do is take it out and wash it off, shake it out, and put it back in place, it costs a little more but the overall savings is worth the cost, I hope this helps to clairify your question about filters, please rate this for us , and thank you again for your question,

First, the thermostat white wire is the wire that initiates the furnace to start. When you select heat on your thermostat the tech should get a 24-28 volts between the white wire and common on the thermostat wire in the furnace. If you do not get the required voltage, there is a break in the wire from the furnace to the thermostat that needs to be tracked down and eliminated.

When the thermostat calls for heat sometimes the gas pack works fine and sometimes it doesnt work at all . the inducer motor comes on but the burners dont ignite . what could be the problem ?

Could be the igniter or the thermocouple. The blower has to start first and it does but it will run on endlessly without further action unless the igniter heats the thermocouple to open the gas valve and fire the burner.

American standard heat pump will only work on emergency heat with fan turned on not auto but only works a little while then quits i can turn it off for about 20 min. and back on emergency heat with fan on...

How old is the unit? Heat pumps don't work when it's real cold, you know it's limits. If it's not real cold outside, then it may be low on gas or such and need a service call.

3 ton cooling capacity 90,000 btu heat capacity. In Vermont it would be enough if the home was a 4 or 5 star home. Remember it is only 80% efficient so you will only net 72,000 btu output.

Wont heat a 1,500 sqft one story home..air is cold by time gets to far end of home..gas pack 3 years old

One thing you can do is slow the blower down, this
will give you greater temperature rise and heat evenly.
The length of the home is what is needed.

Its possible that you need to have dampers installed in your ductwork or you need a booster fan installed
on the ductwork that feeds that side of the house.

My guess is that you need 80,000 btu heat output
to come close to heat the house. Since ductwork is
sized for cooling you would need 36,000 Btu Cooling
output. More information is needed

I have a fairly new 3 ton gas pack unit. it makes a really loud rumbling sound when the the heating side fires up and contines rumbling for aproximently 2-3 minutes.sounds like the heat exchanger is gooing...

It sounds like this is when your unit is heating up before the fan is turned on.
There is a thermostat inside the unit that delays the fan until the temp has risen inside the heat exchanger. This keeps it from blowing cold air when the unit first comes on. With this said, this should not be that loud. If it is, there is something wrong with it. Because of it being a gas pack, If I were you, I would call the installers back and have them come out and take a look at it. There should be no charge if this sound your hearing is normal because they should have informed you of the operation of the unit prior to leaving the day they installed it. And if it is a problem, it should be under warranty.
When I sale and install a unit, I go over every operation with the customer before I am finished. I put the unit in every mode and explain what is going on each time something changes. Some listen and some don't but it stopped a lot of call backs and made a lot more satisfied customers.

How far from the house should the outside unit be located?

If your outdoor fan is a vertical discharge in other words if the fan blows the air up from the top of the unit then one foot from house is fine, but if it is horizontal discharge or blows it out the side then the airflow needs to be directed away from the house or the unit needs to be moved away from the house far enough that it doesn’t restrict the airflow.
For the blower running on high speed a 4 ton unit is usually 1600 cfm so on low cfm it may seem like high speed. There should be some speed taps on the indoor pc board and if you look in your installation guide it should tell you what taps you need to get the lower airflow if its not correct.
For the luke warm air in the 2 ton mode, the coil is a still 4 tons but the compressor now is only pumping 2 tons of refrigerant so the discharge temperature and head pressure will be much lower and that is what determines how much heat you get, so you will get less heat. The 2 ton mode is for times when you only need a little heat or cool, when you need more then you will get the 2nd stage which is the full 4 tons of heat.
