it keeps building I end up using it cause I need it but it builds up. It does not seem to ever get built up to 100 - 120 as I usually end up needing it and am tired of waiting for it. But even when I have waited a while, (as it continues to go on and off) it never seems to get built up all the way

I have repaired many craftsman compessors with the problem that you are having. I just use the process of elimination to find the broken wire. I use a short pigtail and attach it to the motor side of the pressure switch. This will isolate the motor from the switch and the power cord. Use caution not to overfill the compressor as this will test the safety valve. If the motor runs ok then move the pigtail to the powercord side of the switch. This will eliminate the power cord. If problem is within the motor check the connectors under plate and capacitor cover. To test the capacitor you will need to find a meter with cap test capabilities or repair shop will test for free. The cap should test within 95% or printed value in (uf). If all parts test ok then motor could have internal thermal breaker that is weak. Good luck.

Hello again. It would seem that your motor is overheating and the internal breaker in the motor trips and then when it cools down the breaker automatically resets and the motor runs until it overheats again and so on and so on.
One thing that could cause this is your using an extension cord and the compressor motor is not getting adequate voltage which can cause the motor to overheat.
Unfortunately oilless compressors don't last very long and wear out to a point that they can never build up pressure. You can replace the piston and it will work for a while but, I would recommends getting a oil type air compressor and use this one for extra storage capacity. If you need any more help just ask.

Check for a leak between you compressor head (pump) and your tank. Your pump output may be good but as your tank pressure gets higher the leak will not allow the tank to build up.

Cold weather will freeze the water the compressor normally makes and this can prevent the switch diaphragm from releasing.... also drain the tank

First, the simple answer - check the AMP draw on the compressor. It should be on the motor or compressor nameplate/tag. Even a small compressor can use alot of power, and blow the breaker if there are other things on a circuit.

Does it seem to run OK for as long as it runs?

My craftsman air compressor model 919 16737 1.1 hp 17 gal 150 psi won't build up any air pressure. It runs but sounds a little odd.

Probably the check valve has failed. It apparently is where the pipe goes into the tank from the compressor.

are you using an extension cord? if so, plug the compressor into a wall socket, if it fires up fine then your extension cord is too long or not heavy enough - other problems could be a bad start capacitor, a loose connection in the pressure switch, or a bad switch

Craftsman compressor won't cycle off

Hi, First, I think the cutoff pressure is 135psi and there is an overpressure valve so let it run a little longer. I don't know exactly which model you have ( some of these were oil less) but if it is running longer than you remember, be sure to check the oil if necessary, make sure you are not using a long extension as this will cause the motor to slow down and definitely check to make sure the water is drained and the drain petcock is closed all the way. Also check it without an air hose attached. Good Luck!
