Question about Canon MultiPASS MP390 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Printer not printing color or black and white properly.

My mp390 canon printer/fax will only prints green. we tried to clean the heads but nothing printed.

Black and white prints are not black


Sorry, steve, that you are experiencing this problem.

According to canon.com's website regarding the i9900 InkJet Photo Printer:

Why color ink may be used when printing in black and white Even when printing in black and white, color ink is used for the following reasons:
  1. Automatic cleaning of the print head.

    To prevent the print head nozzles from clogging, the print head is automatically cleaned periodically. At that time, a small amount of each color ink is consumed.

    Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink is also consumed.

  2. Color inks may be used to create black.

    When printing in grayscale or on photo paper or when duplex printing, although printing appears in black and white, the color black may be created using the three (cyan, magenta, and yellow) color inks. Printers without a pigment black tank / cartridge will print black / grayscale will create a composite black using color ink even on plain paper.

    Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink may be consumed.
  3. In order to keep the heavy black ink from smearing on the page or in the printer, color ink is used when duplex printing to help create black text.

I might suggest taking out the color ink cartridges leaving only black there, but some printers don't take kindly to this. So, you may have to further experiment with magenta, cyan, and yellow to make it at least seem b&w to your best eye's judgment.

My Canon mp390 printer doesn't print


I had this problem several times, had to buy new print head until I found that to clean it you should use ammonia. It really worked for me. You should really try ammonia it does work.

For a while the black ink wasn't printing and only the color... and because I was not able to print using black ink, I stopped using printer, and now color doesn't even work It just prints blank pages....


The print head is clogged. I had the same problem with only the black ink. I tried to soak it over night and let it sit on a paper towel soaked with windex. this didnt work so I figured it was time to replace the printer as the print head was probably just as expensive as to buy a new one. So with nothing to loose I got out my trusty can of WD40 removed the print head, removed the ink cartridges from the heads, sprayed the bottom and filled the top where the ink cartidge sits and within 15 minutes the WD40 began to flow on the paper towel. After a while I cleaned out the excess WD40 and replaced the cartridges and head to the printer and it worked perfectly. Good Luck. You have nothing to loose.

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you. We regret that black ink does not print from your MP390.
The issue may be with the print head. The print head holds the ink tanks.
You can print a Nozzle Check Pattern to confirm whether the inks are being correctly ejected from the print head nozzles and whether the print head is correctly aligned. Please follow these steps to do so:
1. On the MultiPASS control panel, press [Additional Functions].
2. Press '<' (left) or '>' (right) arrow to select [MAINTENANCE].
3. Press Set. [NOZZLE CHECK] will appear.
4. Press Set again and a Nozzle Check Pattern will print. If lines are broken or white lines are present, clean the print head nozzles.
Verify if the black grid pattern prints at the top. If not, then the nozzles may be clogged.
Please follow these steps to perform a Print Head Refreshing for the
MP390:
1. On the MultiPASS control panel, press Additional Functions. '1. FAX SETTINGS' will appear on the bottom row of the display.
2. Press '<' (left arrow) or '>' (right arrow) to select '3.
MAINTENANCE.'
3. Press Set. 'Nozzle Check' will appear.
4. Press '>' the right arrow to select '3. HEAD REFRESHING' and then press Set. The print head cleaning takes approximately 1 to 2 minutes to complete.
5. Perform a Nozzle Check Pattern.
Nozzle Check Pattern:
Please follow these steps to print a Nozzle Check Pattern to confirm whether the inks are being correctly ejected from the print head nozzles and whether the print head is correctly aligned:
1. On the MultiPASS control panel, press Additional Functions. '1. FAX SETTINGS' will appear on the bottom row of the display.

4. Press '>' the right arrow to select '2. CLEANING' and then press Set. The print head cleaning takes approximately 30 seconds to complete.
5. Print a Nozzle Check Pattern to see if the print quality is improved.
6. Perform Head Refreshing if lines are still broken or white lines still appear. If nozzle check pattern is missing colors, replace the ink tank.
Once you have completed two deep cleanings, please perform another Nozzle Test. If colors are still missing, turn off the printer.
After 24 hours, turn the printer on and perform one more Deep Print Head Cleaning. Once the cleaning is complete, print another Nozzle Test.
After you have completed the Nozzle Test, please let us know the results.
This may be caused by the ink jets in the cartridge print head (the device that holds the ink tanks) wearing out or the ink nozzles starting to clog up. Remove and reseat the print head. Verify that ink has not built up on the bottom of the print head. Please follow the instructions below to reseat the print head:
1. Power the unit on.
2. Open the cover of the printer to bring the print head holder to the center.
3. Remove the ink tanks and set them on a protective covering, such as a rag.
4. Raise the locking lever to release the print head.
5. Remove the print head and reinstall it.
6. Lock the lever back down, gently.
7. Replace the ink tanks. Make sure they securely snap into place in the proper slots.
8. Lower the cover of the unit.
If you have performed multiple print head cleanings but the issue continues, it is most likely that the cartridge print head (the device that holds the ink tanks) will need to be replaced.

Canon MP390 Printing no magenta & now nothing!


Hey Everyone!

I have an MP390 that had a similar problem over a year ago. There is a very simple fix that worked for me, and I'm pretty sure that it will work for you too. :^)

Outline:
Open the printer as though you were going to replace the ink tanks. Once opened, with the print head centered, open the latch and remove all of the ink tanks. Gently remove the print head (it should come right out, even easier than the ink cartridges). Take a paper towel, wet it with warm water, and then gently clean the bottom part of the print head. The bottom part is the part that will have an orange ribbon running to four metal openings that look like tiny nozzles. After wiping away all of the built-up gunk (on mine there was a thick sludge), grab a new and wet paper towel, and lightly press it against the nozzles. This should start sucking ink through the print head, and you will begin to see four distinct colors (CMYK) bleeding into the towel. Once done, lightly dry the print head off (make sure that there are no loose water droplets) and then reassemble everything. Print a test page and everything should work. If it doesn't change the ink tanks just to be sure.

Fortunately for you, Canon has made the print head on the MP390 very easy to service/remove, so cleaning is a snap.

Steps:
  1. Turn Printer On
  2. Open Printer As If To Change Ink Tanks
  3. Release Ink Tank Latch
  4. Remove Ink Tanks
  5. Remove Print Head (Black Plastic Assembly In Which Ink Tanks Rest)
  6. Use Wet Paper Towel (With Warm Water) To Clean Tank/Nozzle
  7. Dry Excess Water
  8. Reassemble
  9. Close Printer
  10. Print Test Page

Perhaps your cartride is low on ink, some printers will give you a status inside your printer settings on how much ink is in the cartridges.

Canon printer MP390


My MP390 wasn't printing black, despite the cartridge(s) being new. I reinstalled CD and then it worked. The next time, it did not print again. I, then d/l driver from online...same thing. worked once and then not. Also, it doesn't copy anything in black

Black not printing


I just ran into a similar issue with my MP390. Actually both the color and black inks were not printing very well. I would get very inconsistent printing. Fixed the problem very easily and quickly as follows: On the top of each print cartridge, there is a small hole. Remove the print head (lift the gray bar at the front of the print head and lift out the print head) with the cartridges still in place. Holding the print head over a piece of paper/paper towel, blow into the holes on the top of the cartridges (either directly or using a straw/tube of some kind). You should get ink coming out of the botton of the print head, both color and black. Replace and print head and test print.
