The moment I switch on my notebook computer, a white strip, which is about an inch, or an inch and a half wide appears from top to bottom of the screen on the left hand side of it. The area covered by the strip is always totally devoid of images. The strip remains as long as the computer remains on.

Re: Part of my LCD screen is missing.
This sounds like you have a damaged LCD screen or dead pixels. I don't know anyway to solve this besides changing the screen. The only other thing would be a motherboard problem meaning u have to change that but most likely its the screen.

Yes you are correct. I would say 95% of the time, you will need a LCD screen replacement. Also be sure to disconnect and reconnect the lcd cables, at the motherboard and behind the lcd itself, just to make sure the cables aren't making bad connection.
I have provided you a link to MANY lcd screen for your laptop on EBAY.
check the connection under the keyboard. you might have to remove the panel near the screen just above the keyboard ito get to the screws. the plug is usually what looks to be a plastic band with lines on it that slides into a thin slot. i had the same problem with my laptop screen. there were white, green, blue and red strips of pixels every inch and a half.
Unfortunately the fix is a new lcd. The tab welds at the top of the lcd are not allowing that portion to work correctly. As these tabs are fused to the lcd you will need to replace the lcd. My Toshiba M105 is almost the same.(I Have 4" Gone) on the right side. so to use it I clicked and dragged my system tray from the bottom to the side. And shrunk my web pages to utilize tthe good portion.
I suppose I should replace it but being only 18months old the LCD's run about 160.00 USD.(sometimes I just hook up an external monitor.
