SOURCE: Tractor Will Not Move And Dies When Brake Is Released

I would check the wires and clean the connectors and make sure seat switch is working. If that is not working, it's like getting off the seat without holding the brake/clutch pedal down or getting off seat with blades engaged. Both will cause engine to die.

SOURCE: Craftsman Lawn Tractor dies when cluch/blades are engaged and ...

The way you describe your problem, all of it could be caused just by the seat cushion pressure switch. It is possible to by-pass this by putting a jumper across the terminals, but it is there as a safety feature, preventing you from falling out of the seat and under the blades, or in case of a rollover, it automatically kills the engine. If you by-pass this, it is at your own risk, but i did the same thing on mine. Hope this helps :)

you have a safety switch malfunctioning or a transistorized relay not working properly. Go to www.partsdirect.com, this is sears website. It should be able to find and illustrated parts list for your mower.

SOURCE: John Deere Lawn Tractor LX176. Battery discharge

Locate voltage regulator above battery to the left as you sit on machine, its behind frame that supports steering wheel.Once you have found it use a light to shine on harness and follow the brown wire that leads into regulator. The plastic around that wire should not be burnt or showing any other color. The LX series machines had a problem with brown wire coming loose and causing the charging light to stay on.Remove plug from reg and use small screwdriver to clean out wire and work it a little so it makes good contact.

SOURCE: have a john deere lawn tractor. Blade will not

Check both belts on deck. Check if the clutch is clicking in. If not it will most likely need a new pto switch.

How do I free a stuck foot brake?

First check to see if the parking brake mechanism is engaged, if it is and wont release lubricate it with penetrating oil and work it in to all moving parts, working them back and forth until they move freely, if it has been setting outside for a long time, you may just have to do this with the brake pedal and linkage also.

Most all mowers and tractors have mechanical brake rid adjusters..just follow the linkage from the pedal to the brake rigging...you should find some adjusting in the linkage...good luck..

Yes there is a safety switch. And this safety switch has to be engaged. If its not engaged then the JD tractor will not start. On JD 855 the safty switch is located under the seat, There is a rod that must be depressed before engage Somehow that rod is bent or its not pressing the switch to the point that the seat would not fully engage the safty switch. In some cases the switch itself is faulty. It has to be checked . Thanks. keep updated for any more query.you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Mower wont engage

The problem is in the park brake circuit, either the wires are off,the switch is bad or the park brake is on.Also check the switch under the hood near the linkage for the pto lever.

Make sure the brake pedal is fully depressing. Check the linkages for the forward / reverse and brake pedal. Check for grass build up causing the linkages to bind.

Either remove the drivers side rear wheel and disconnect linkage or cut the cable from underneath (do this as a last resort... if you want to keep your emergency brake for future use, you'll have to replace the cable.)
