I have tried that, it won't let me boot from the cd or the hard drive...

    just the black screen with

    BOOTMGR is missing

press ctrl alt del to restart

  • pappy101 Jan 22, 2009

    that does not work either...

won't boot from cd or hdd

  • pappy101 Jan 22, 2009

again, all the computer does when restarting is the black screen...nothing else...the only option it gives me is ctrl alt del

I have a copy of XP Pro and that does not work either..

    I'm stumped

  • pappy101 Jan 22, 2009

again that's all great info. but all I get when booting to cd or hdd is the same screen with NO options

  • pappy101 Jan 23, 2009

don't have either one at this point, that's why I'm truing to fix it here myself...

To me it would seem to indicate a problem with the hard drive...The cd drive has intermittently been disappearing also before this final meltdown

  • pappy101 Jan 23, 2009

The cd drive was working fine before this happened, but it was disappearing altogether on occasion so I'm not sure what that indicates.

I don't have an external myself, but a friend of mine does, so that may work...

  • pappy101 Jan 23, 2009

the problem with an external drive is that the computer won't have access to it due to the fact that they are all USB drives, is that correct or am I missing something here

  • silient bob Feb 12, 2009

i have a problem with boot mgr not responding, and showing that isn't there. won't boot up. except in bios

Its not the hard drive my frined, its the boot loader it has been deleted or it has been compressed the only way to fix this is to use the recovery cd you have, to boot from cd-rom you need to go into bios which is usualy F2 or F5 key, then under boot manager or somthing is the primary and secondary boot, change the primary to CD-ROM, then save it and restart then it should boot from cd-rom then you have do a start-up recovery.

ok, then you need a copy on windows xp or vista, even the upgrade disc will work, and load that cd-rom there is a shortcut key like F key on your laptop which does a multiboot or boot from cd-rom

try going into safe mode? pressinf F5 or F8 depends on laptop if not try doing the same thing by pressing at the begining F key then click on last known configuration that worked, if you did get into safe mode do a system restore.

Find yourself receiving "BOOTMGR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" message? Don't stress! Its easier to fix than you think. Here's how:

    SOLUTION 1

    - Get your Vista installation DVD and pop it into your drive.
    - Then restart your computer
    .
    - Set your computer to boot from DVD or CD in your BIOS.

    Vista
will ask you for language and keyboard layout information, after which
you will be asked if you want to re-install Vista or repair your
    existing installation.
Select Repair. After which Vista's System Recovery Tool will start.

Select Startup Repair and let Vista do its thing! That really is all there is to it!

If that doesn't work try this:

    SOLUTION 2

    If
the previous method does not resolve the problem, you can rebuild the
BCD store by using the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery
Environment. To do this, follow these steps:

    - Get your Vista installation DVD and pop it into your drive.
    - Then restart your computer.
    - Press a key when you are prompted.
    - Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next
    - Click Repair your computer
    - Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next
    - In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt
    - Type bootrec /rebuildbcd and then press ENTER

If Bootrec runs successfully, it will present you with the installation
path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type
Yes . A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added
    successfully.

    • If Bootrec cannot locate any missing Windows
installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must
re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order
shown below: (Remember to press ENTER after each command)

    bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

    bootrec /rebuildbcd

    - Restart the computer.

then only one more soluition is to get the warrenty involved in this one, or if you have insurence claim off it.

its not the hard drive thats intact, what has happened the boot manager has become corrupt or missing they only normal way to fix it is to use the operating system cd-rom and do a start-up repair, but if your cdrom is failing to read cds, then i can suggest a external cd-rom and try doing the same thing.

external cd-rom not a hard drive, it wont work with the external hard drive!

Boot mgr is missing

Boot Manager is missing If the boot partition no longer can be found, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information
More Info MS KB 919529 More Info MS KB 927391 Check points for fixing missing boot-manager: Check that your boot device is configured properly Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". Boot Manager is compressed If by accident having compressed the entire boot partition, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart OR maybe try this first. Check points for fixing compressed boot-manager: Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". If the above doesn't solve the problem then boot into WinRE again, but when selecting the Vista-installation, then press "Load Drivers" (Instead of "Next") and use the mini Windows Explorer to right-click the boot-drive and deselect "Compress this Drive" and choose Apply to sub-folders and files. If that also fails then boot into WinRE again, and go to the "Command Prompt" and execute these commands: compact /U C:\bootmgr compact /U C:\ntldr If you for some strange reason have lost your Vista DVD, then you can also use a Windows 2000 / XP install CD and enter the recovery console instead and execute the following commands: attrib -c c:\bootmgr attrib -c c:\ntldr

Try start up in Safe Mode press F8. Choose Safe Mode, when at the choice window, to select either Safe Mode Desktop, OR System Restore, chooses system restore and choose a time before you had the "Problem" and follow instructions. This should get you back.

Bootmgr is missing

You have formatted the HDD in another computer and the “boot manager” was destroyed.
There is no operating system on the HDD and therefore the error message: “BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" appears

The second message “PXE-M0F: Existing PXE ROM” says that the notebook tries to boot form the LAN but it’s not able to find an OS using the LAN connection!

Why all this error messages appears?!
Well, I think the CD/DVD drive cannot read the inserted WinXP CD and therefore in switches to LAN.

Note; You can boot from the drive by pressing the “C” button immediately after notebook starting or you will press the F12 to get the booting menu. Then you could choose the ODD as booting source.

If you will be not able to boot from your WinXP CD I assume either the CD is faulty or the CD/DVD drive cannot handle this CD.

Used Recovery Disk and I have an application error

It seems like your hard drive has some bad sectors.

You need to run some disk manager software to check/fix tour disk.

The best choice would be to download the "ultimate cd" from here

Boot from the cd, go to "hard disk tools" and select a disk manager (better to select the one from the same manufacturer of the disk).

Run a scan, and fix the drive (if it is possible). Then rerun your system restore cd again.

If the hard drive can't be fixed, you'll have to replace it before running the system retore.

Good luck!

Compressed boot manager

Windows Vista includes a new Boot Manager (BootMgr) that replaces the old NT Loader (Ntldr).

If the boot partition no longer can be found, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information

More Info MS KB 919529
More Info MS KB 927391

This can usually be solved by checking the boot devices, and if no problems found then use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair".

If by accident having compressed the entire boot partition, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
This can usually be solved by using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". If that fails then use WinRE to enter the "Command Prompt" and execute these commands:
  • compact /U C:\bootmgr
  • compact /U C:\ntldr
