Question about Computers & Internet

I have a Gateway Laptop, Model MX6428. I recently went to replace the keyboard as the keys kept falling off the old one. In the process of installing the new keyboard the The staionary connector on the board (I don't know what the name of the board is) broke on the right side which connects to the black connector clip. I don't know if I have to purchase a new board that has the stationary clip in it(don't know which one) or if there is another way to repair this problem. Please let me know ASAP as I need to get to my e-mails. I don't want to send it out as there are no places close by and by the time I pay for parts and labor, I might as well buy a new one. I can't find a schematic of my laptop anywhere, that would really help me out at least I would know the names of all the parts. Is there something like that out there? Thanks, Gabriela

What is the name of the board that would need replacing? I have the black clip as the part that broke is on the board and I think looks like it is soldered down. Myabe you can also recommend a cheap source for replacement parts along with a detailed configuration, schematic, drawing ie.

Did the connector break, as in a piece of it came off, or did the ribbon cable that connects the keyboard just slip out?

If the cable just slipped out, then often these connectors are made like this. You will find that the plastic connector on the motherboard pops up, and you slide the ribbon down inside a slot in the connector, then push the piece that popped up back down, where it holds the ribbon into the connector be pressure.

Reply back what you are seeing.

Ack Gabriella ... you really shouldn't go breaking those little ribbon cable connectors :-(

A laptop repair shop could possibly solder in a new connector for you, but the cost would be restrictive.

Maybe time to consider buying a new machine?

Small plastic brown or black part.. that clips in the keyboard flex connector correct? That is hard to find and only comes with the board and the connectors, if you found a replacement keyboard connector it would include the small clip.

The small part hardly has any value and shouldn't cost much. I will look and get back to you.

Thats the motherboard. And If I understood correctly what you where looking for ...

The plastic part comes out from the connector if the otside is broken so you could replace that easyly, the problem is finding one of those.

Replacing the whole board is not cheap and may cost around the price of a new laptop.

Only options I see here right now

    • New board

    • Used or fauly board with the connector intact

    • laptop parts are available at http://www.pchub.com - Send them a picture of the part you need maybe they have it, I know they have faulty / dead motherboards maybe they have the part.

Have you pressed/un-pressed the NUMLOCK key?

OR

You may have a stuck key somewhere on your 10-key numeric keyboard. Sometimes dirt (coffee, dust, soda) is blocking the contacts to the circuit board from the keyboard.

How to function Fn

Step 1:
The purpose of a laptop's function key is to activate the secondary function of any dual-purpose key. The function key can accidentally be locked into place if you hit the wrong combination of keys so that all of the keys only perform their secondary function. The exact process for unlocking the function key will vary depending on the make and model of your laptop and whether you have recently used an external keyboard.

Check the manual that came with your laptop and locate the section on the function of each keyboard key. Open a Web browser and navigate to the support section of the laptop manufacturer's website if you do not have the manual that originally came with your laptop. Use the drop-down menus on the support page to choose the specific product line and then model of your laptop. Click on the "Product Support" link and then navigate to the "Manuals" section of the page. Click on the link to open a PDF version of the manual for your laptop. Browse down to the section about the functions of the keyboard keys. Find the sequence of keys you need to press to unlock the function key on your laptop. Press and hold the function key on the keyboard and then press the other keys required to unlock it. Try using the most standard keyboard combinations if you don't have the manual or it does not give any information about the function key. Press the function key and then the shift key and see if it successfully unlocks the function key. Attempt using the other standard keys in conjunction with the function key, such as the "F11," "F12" and "Ctrl" keys. Plug a USB keyboard into the USB port on your laptop if you have recently used an external keyboard with the laptop. Check the light above the "Numlock" key on the external keyboard and see if it is turned on. Press the key and make sure the light is turned off and then remove the keyboard to unlock the function key.

How to replace dvd drive in gateqay MX 6428?

1) Remove ALL power.
Remove the AC adapter (Charger) and Battery.

2) Lay a soft static free cloth on the table you are working on.
Helps prevent scratching the table, and the laptop.

3) Laptop closed, turn it over, lay it upside down on the soft cloth, Battery Compartment AWAY from you.

4) In the middle/right of the laptop is a large odd shaped panel.
Goes from the middle of the laptop to the upper right.
Has 7 screws in it.

This is the Memory Bay Cover.
There are 4 screws along the Top.
2 screws along the Bottom.

These screws are loosened to remove the Memory Bay Cover.
They do Not remove.

HOWEVER, there is a 7th screw. This is the Keyboard screw.
When removed the Keyboard can begin to be removed.
It has to be removed in order to remove the Memory Bay Cover.

This screw is located on the Right side of the Memory Bay Cover.
It is right next to the CURVE.

Loosen it as much as possible. When removing the Memory Bay Cover this screw may fall out. Be AWARE so that the cover is on top of the table, and can catch the screw, if it falls out.

With the Keyboard screw loosened all the way, and the 6 screws which hold the Memory Bay Cover in place, go to the Top of the Memory bay Cover.

There is a Thumb Notch at the Top/Left side of the cover. Use your thumb to lift up on the cover.

NOTE*
There are plastic tabs formed out of the cover, and they are on the opposite side of the Thumb Notch.
Raise the cover to a tilting position, and lift the cover away from the laptop.
Otherwise you could break these plastic tabs off.

5) At this point you NEED to follow Anti-Static Precautions.
You are looking at the copper Cooling Tube, Heatsink, and Fan Assembly.

The Processor is right there, under the Top Cooling Tube's aluminum metal plate.
{The graphics chipset is under the small aluminum metal plate, at the end of the Bottom Cooling Tube }

A Processor is the most susceptible hardware component, to Static shock.
It would be best to use a plastic screwdriver, or wear an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source.
(Average cost of an ESD wrist strap is around $3 to $6)

IF nothing else, KEEP your fingers away from the cooling system.
Make SURE the metal Philips screwdriver you are using has no Static.

In the Memory Bay Compartment to the immediate Right, of the bottom Cooling Tube's metal plate, is the DVD drive screw.

Look at the copper Cooling Tube on the bottom. Look at the small aluminum metal plate on the end. Come straight over to the right.

There's the screw hole you removed the screw from, for the Memory Bay Cover, and above it is the DVD drive screw.
Remove this screw.
(Loosen all the way, CAREFULLY turn the laptop over, and let the screw fall to the table. Do NOT lose it)

Press the tray button on the DVD drive. This makes the tray pop out a little bit. Gently pull the tray until it is all the way out, then pull the DVD drive out of the laptop.

Also, here is a free Service Manual,

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-gateway

Go to the top heading that starts with Gateway 400. (400 in blue)
Drop down to the second line, and scroll across to MX6400.
Click on MX6400.

{The Gateway MX6428 is part of the Gateway MX6400 series of Notebook PC's }

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name (MX6400), it may take up to 30 seconds before the first page comes up.

At the top of the PDF file is the page number box. It is to the right of the Down Arrow.
Go to Page 11.

Where can you buy the keyboard? my son has ripped some keys off and I do not know where to find either the little plastic replacement springs or a full keyboard.

Here a couple of links where you can find a replacement keyboard: http://www.sunvalleyus.com/GatewayKeyboard/ http://www.nextag.com/gateway-keyboard/shop-html http://www.papatek.com/Gateway-Keyboard/ http://www.amazon.com/DekCell-Laptop-Keyboard-Gateway-MX6000/dp/B000NJYHRA
It depends also on the model of your laptop.
You can also buy just the keys and put them yourself: http://www.laptop-keys.com/Select%20Model.php?model=Gateway Also here is a guide, if you want to do it yourself: (do not delete) utube.png

I broke my spacebar off my laptop gateway computer! How do i fix this?

Of all the keys on the keyboard, replacing the SPACEBAR is probably the most difficult. The SPACEBAR is kept even by a metal wire that is inserted into slots on each leg of the plastic bar key. However, you have to get the wire into the slots without depressing the wire. If you push the wire down, you compress the wire and installation becomes impossible. As a general rule, do not remove the SPACEBAR unless absolutely necessary. If you remove the SPACEBAR, remove several surrounding key caps also. This will let you get some tools under the SPACEBAR wire later on. Once the SPACEBAR is reinserted, you can easily replace any of the other key caps.

My 2 year old son clean my laptop with some cleaning solution and now my laptop not running P.O.S.T and some of the keys on my keyboard does not work or they dont work how they should. I have a gateway M...

I think the solution bit is went inside those keys. Try to dry the whole laptop with the use of the fan, hair dryer etc. If still the problem is there then better to take it for service center to check thoroughly because as you suspect the key may be gone bad completely.

You need to download the Win7 drivers from Gateway's web site or you may have problems. If they are not available for your model then you will have problems as the OS will not be supported.
