Question about Compaq Network adapter

1 Answer

I have Compaq Presario VBL - PRO 1900 - XL161. It doesn't have a slot for a network cable plug in. it has only USB or a slot for a dial up connection cord. What kind of adapter shall I get to be able to use one of the slots for Internet cable?

Hi!

Your Compaq V2000 has an Intel Pro Wireless 2200 BG wireles adapter. (doesn't support N, but that's not the point I think)

If your new network configuration is based on WPA/WPA2 encyption, this adapter has some known problems to establish a connection. It works great with WEP, but not so well with WPA.
Sometimes the issue can be solved by installing the latest versions of drivers and software for the wireless adapter.
If it still doesn't work, a known workaround is to disable via device manager all other network adapters in the computer (ethernet adapter), leaving active only the Intel Pro 2200 wireless adapter.

Hope it helped,

Bogdan

I am trying to figure out the front connector cables to this compaq presario but there are no plastic labels on the connectors is there any way you can give me a quide as to how they connect?

You don't say anything about your computer except it is a Compaq Presario. The Presario line has been on the market for around 20 years or longer with literally hundreds of variations and models depending on the country it was developed for and the OS it shipped with.

In the absence of the model number, I would suggest to you, you may find a microphone input which will be a round minoral mini-banna plug; you may find speaker output which will be minoral or stereo mini-banna plug. There may be a headphone outlet which will look line the speaker outlet and operate the same way with reduced power. You will probably find one or more USB connectors and you may find a fire wire connection, 1394. You may have a smart media slot; a composit/flash slot; MMC/Sd slot and a MS/MS Pro slot. There may be other slots and other ports. Do not force any connection - each has its own charastics and will connect only to the proper mate. When you try to connect, assure the plug and cable are properly oriented (right side up etc.).

NORMALLY, I would expect you would not use any of these ports or slots on a daily, routine basis prefrring to use the ports in the rear to reduce clutter on your desk.

If you will go to www.compaq.com/support and search for your model, you will probably find all this informaiton and more concerning your Compaq Presarrio.

I hope this helps you with your trouble. Thank you for your interest in FixYa.com

Compaq Presario 5220 Desktop Windows 98 internet: Dial-up Can a DSL card be installed or would I need to go with a wireless USB? And would wireless USB work on Win98?

You can install a network card inside the computer. You will need a PCI or an ISA card. (I know PCI network cards are easy to find at most of the computer shops.) See this site for how to install a card: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07111&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=93139 . However you should open your computer and check the space between the devices in the slots in the computer. There is an AGP slot with a video graphics card, 1 PCI/ISA slot with a modem (default specs), one free ISA slot and one free PCI slot. However depending on the graphics card one of these slots may be blocked by the card. You'll either need to get a card that fits the available slot or remove the modem and use that slot.

Here are some PCI 10/100 network cards: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=587&name=10-100%20Ethernet%20PCI/ISA . Most of these are compatible with Win98. I'm not sure if there are any gigabit NIC with Win98 drivers.

Wired and wireless USB NIC adapters exist. However, you will be limited to the USB speed. If you have USB 1.1, that will be really slow. Most likely your computer will require a reboot anytime the connection is lost.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(who recently removed an internal modem to put in a PCI gigabit card in a newer desktop than yours. The procedure was straightforward and improved network performance in the household immensely. The failing on-board NIC was tying up the router for everyone.)

I don't know where to insert a card from a Polaroid camera into my Compaq CPU?

You may not have a direct slot.
Did the camera come with a down load cable?
Or pick up a multi reader that plugs into your USB connection to down load

Purchase a USB wireless adapter, install the software then plug it in when the software tells you to.
You should now be able to connect to wireless networks.

Kicks off dial-up after 5 minutes-dial-up shows still connected compaq presario sr111onx

This is normal. All users of dial up get kicked off randomly to make room on the service providers servers for other users to log on. In addition to it's extremely slow speed, this is the downside to dial up. I would suggest switching to DSL or Cable. It's a constant 'On' connection you cannot get kicked off of.

How do i have a usb port run a high speed device

The USB port in your computer is not the new high-speed USB 2.0 version, and when you plug a USB 2.0 device in you will get that message. Most USB devices will still work but not give best performance. Just close the message window.

The network cable unplugged message can be disabled through the network settings. Normally Windows is set to display that message when there is no network cable connected. You can just ignore the message.

Network cable wire too large to fit laptop connection

If your laptop is too old probably does not have a network card built in. In that case you need a PCMCIA network card and PCMCIA slot available in your computer.

You can get one here:
