we purchased the dryer 13 years ago and just moved from a home that had 4 prong outlet to a home with a 3 prong outlet so i changed the cord last night to a 3 prong cord and now the dyer is not heating up and my wife says it is running for about 15 minutes and then stops and the lights start flashing.

yes, i made sure of that but i will check again when i get home tonight just to make sure.

Is this a new or used dryer?

If used, did it ever work that you are aware?

The timer function is separate from the heating function, and switching from 4 prong (leg 1, leg 2, neutral, ground) to 3 prong (leg1, leg 2, neutral) would not have any impact on operation. The timer motor will not speed up if incorrectly wired, only burn-up (with reference to the 15 minute comment.).

When you connected the new cord, did you make certain to connect the line 1/2 wires to the Line1/2 input's, and the Neutral to Neutral inside the wiring compartment?

Not heating up almost sounds like the heating elements are not getting their full 220 VAC, but then if you had something wired wrong in back, a breaker should trip. Make sure you've connected the new power cord correctly at the input power point. I am guessing this problem occurred between the time that you had it at the old house, and the new house, with the power cord changeover.

I have a 3 prong wall mount outlet for my dyer and want to put in a 4 prong. how do I do it?

Veronica,
If you are talking about the outlet you plug your dryer into, that would require an certified electrician to make the change since that is covered by electrical codes. If you are talking about changing the pigtail on the dryer, you could do that yourself. Just remember to take the brass strip off that goes from the middle of power cord block to the ground. You have to separate the neutral from the ground in a four wire situation. Hope this helps!

Why doesn't the timer count down? The dryer runs & heats but the Timer doesn't move. I replaced the Timer block but nothing changed. Is this related to a bad sensor?

Install power cord dryer

Before you change wiring check and see if its a proper cord for a 220 hook up. most three prong are for a 110 hook up. Ask an electrician for advice so you don't have a fire or kill yourself. Most Dryers are 220

The cover on the back should only be held on by screws and are usually easy to get off. Have you checked for these?

Need to change power cord on maytag dryer from 3 prong to 4

Always disconnect electricity before beginning this process.

All the 4 wire cords I have seen are color-coded. The white wire goes to the middle terminal, the green wire goes to any screw you can reach that goes into the metal case of the dyer. The red and black go to the outside terminals of the block and while it doesn't matter which color goes to which terminal I usually follow the color code of the interior dryer wiring that already exists. Good Luck.

Frigidaire GLEQ2152ES Dryer Won't Power UP

IF you find that you have only a 3 wire feed for this dryer (and the reason for the 3 prong receptacle)...then you can not properly install a 4 prong dryer cord to it. You now have 2 choices....either rewire (assuming that it is a 3 wire supply) the entire run from the dryer breaker to the outlet location with 4 wire (typically a run of 8/3 with ground having a black, red, white and bare ground)and install a 4 prong dryer receptacle to match the configuration of the new dryers cord.....OR - you can remove the 4 wire cord and replace it with a 3 wire cord....re-using the ground strap - IF it is still in place.

Wire 3 prong cord

Electric Dryer How To Hook Up Cord pixel_trans.gifFor Three Prong Cords
the Center cord wire goes on the center terminal,
the left on the left ,
and the right on the right.

Note: There should be a ground strap or wire that runs from the center terminal to the dryer case.

For Four Prong Cords
the White cord wire goes in the center,
the Red on the Right,
the Black on the Left.
The green cord wire goes to the case or the external ground screw.

Note: Be sure to disconnect the ground wire or strap that runs from the center terminal to the case. In this Photo (A Whirlpool Dryer) I have ran the wire that runs from the center terminal, the Light Green wire, back to itself rather than cutting it off, just incase I need to put a 3 prong cord back on it some day. The whole purpose of this 3 prong / 4 prong thing is it separates the neutral from the ground. pixel_trans.gif pixel_trans.gif3 Prong Cord Whirlpool Dryer Example terminalblock.jpg 4 Prong Cord Whirlpool Dryer Example 4prongcord_small.jpg

How do you install a 3 prong power supply cord to a GE Dryer?

DO NOT CHANGE THE POWER SUPPLY CORD.
you can't change the power supply cord.
the cord came with the dryer is 240v. the three prong is 120v. the dryer will burn up. if you change the power cord without changing the regulator , motor, and the heating element.
you need to get a electrician to run a 240v double breaker from the panel to the dryer.
