Question about Refrigerators
I found smoke coming out behind of my refrigerator. I investigated where the smoke was coming from and found it was coming from the relay swtich connected to the compressor. My refrigerator is just little over 5yrs old.
I bought this from Sears but they are not willing to investigate this incident without any charges on me.
I am so disappointed by the product and Sears.
DSK we have a kenmore fridge we bought in 2003 it's a two door fridge and freezer. yesterday at around 4 pm my mom left to go to the store and before she left she turned off the dryer. she was gone maybe 10 min. when her and my little sister got out the car they could smell something burning. when my mom opened the door to the house the smell hit her 10 times stronger. burning wire. she ran around franticly grabbing our small cats and she called my dad who told her to turn off the breakers and get out the house. i just so happened to call her from work 30 min away and i told her i was on my way and i called 911. the fire dpt was there when i got there and my mom was in the house and the firedpt was walking around and all they could say was that they smelled something but they didn't know where it was coming from. << WHAT!!
then she flipped the breaker back on and the smell came back. one of the fire fighters was by the stove and icebox and said it's over here. they checked the stove and the smell was weaker. he turned his head around the icebox and there it was. the pulled it apart to find that it was a relay switch and then whole inside of it was burnt and melted. they said that it's not possible for that to catch fire but i don't believe it after all i've read regarding kenmore fridges. it was bought in 2003 after our trailer fire when a stove shorted out and caught a pan of greese on fire while noone was home. we lost our cat. rip precious. so this fridge was new when we got it in 03 and so it is just over 6 yrs old. burnt wire is burnt wire. i don't play with that. thank you jesus for letting my mom return when she did and thank you for keeping us all safe.
You fridge had a shorted realy but no one knew that there was aproblem it had to defrostin prior to melting, the reason why they tripp is because most people don't bother to vacuum the condenser coils that is why they get so hot. i bet there was a clicling noise prior to that i have seen this a thousand times and everytime i look at the coils they are realy dirty specially if you keep your pets inside so that said if the 3 pin on the compressor are melted or if a new realy cant be install a new compressor has to replace and that is about 500.00 or more , call sears buy the service smart agreement from them it will be about 250 and they can install a new compressor that warranty will cover up to 500 dollars in parts and labor and you dont want to fix it they will credit 500 towards a new purchase

I just had a fire in my Maytag. Turns out there is a RECALL on the capacitor/relay for Maytags only. Kenmore uses the same part but will not issue a recall on the item. Weird thing is Kenmore bought Maytag. Kenmore has to resolve ANY issues Maytags have regarding safety but they don't HAVE to resolve their own. Reason being; not enough people have complained to CPSC Home Page
My repair guy said only 43 out of 1.5 million Maytags had fires.... Seemed low. Am I number 44? No, my house didn't burn down so I don't count! Either do you! Anyway, the recalled part is the exact part used in the Kenmore's. If fact, they still use it in the units they build today.
They tend to catch fire, burn the relay/capacitor and the wire harness, often ruining the contacts on the compressor, rendering the entire refridgerator junk. FILE YOUR COMPLAINTS!!!!!!
