First try to repair your windows installation with an appropriate DVDs automated repair option. If it doesn't succeed, try rewriting boot partitions/master boot record. If nothing helps... There's a slight chance that it might be either a virus or problems with hardware. Backup your important data with the help of a liveCD and test your hard drive for errors.

Black screen when turn on after logo goes away

It is not loading the operating system which is an all too common fault.
Restart the computer and press F8 continuously as soon as you have powered on and you will get a menu of options. One of these will be ""system repair"" and you should try this as a first step. This menu page will also allow you to try and start the system in Safe Mode but I suspect you will not be able to do that. You might also find that system repair does not work after leaving it running for many hours.
Which version of windows are you running?

My screen goes off when windows xp starts the boot process

Does the display come back at all?

Is it the same on an external monitor?

As soon as BIOS screen disappears press F8 multiple times until a text menu appears allowing you to to select SAFE MODE. Select SAFE MODE.

DO you get a display now?

Can you select 1024x768 resolution and get a display, if so, rebot and try a normal boot.

Reboot the laptop, as soon as the screen goes blank start pressing the F8 key until you see a menu, select safe mode, if you get the option for the administrator, select it. Once the laptop is up go to control panel, then users, choose your login and then select reset or turn off password. Once complete logout and reboot. Hope this helps.

no computer is trash when you are dealing with a software issue.

boot up and tap on the f8 key... when you get to that screen... choose safe mode... if it successfully boots.... go to start menu... and restart again... it should boot... if it wants to do the update let it.... if still nothing.... f8 again and choose last known good configuration

ok - if you are using XP -go to your start menu - control panel
click on power options and click on the 'advanced' tab - this will give you the options of what happens when you shut your lid.

if using Vista - click on control panel, choose 'classic view' from the left sidebar and carry on as above

hope this helps 8)
