SOURCE: how do I remove wrie protect from external hard

USB drives can be write-protected by modifying the StoreageDevicePolicies Registry key and WriteProtect Registry value.
click Start>run>regedit to open Registry Editor. and press control+F to open the find dialogue box and type "usb device" or "driverdesc" to open usb mass storage device or type "usb mass storage device" in the search windows. And right click on it and delete. This will set the policy value to 0. then insert your usb device. It will work fine.
# Remember: do not delete any unknow files in the registry as this will make some programes not work as usual.

also
If you are running a Windows XP OS then you might be able to:

- click start right click on my computer select open
- Right click the icon of your Flash Drive (It should be F:/ or something)
- Click Properties in the menu that comes up
- Click the Sharing tab
- Click permissions
- And finally, click Allow next to Full Control.
hope this helps

You will need the smartware disk that comes with the drive to connect to a PC and remove the password protection! If you do not have the disk try downloading from the WD website.

My WD element extrenal hard drive won't open. i can see it in my devices, and the blue light stays on. it also makes the sound saying it's connected but I can't see the device in my comput

First thing, try to change the cable, try a different one, then if it does not work, try to connect the hard drive on another computer, and changing cables as well. This will help you to narrow down the problem to find out exactly what the matter is. If the Hard drive spins properly and it does not produce any click-click sound then it is fine. If all the above fail, then you have to slave the hard drive using its internal SATA connection. You have to open up the hard drive and remove the pin that connects the hard drive to the cable. This will enable you to see the SATA connection. Slave the Hard drive on a desktop computer and see if you can gain access to it. If you can, then consider replacing both the cable and the pin that connects the cable to the hard drive. If your hard drive just spins and you can not access it while its a slave to another computer, then the hard drive has a problem.... Try the methods above, i believe your hard drive did not go this bad...

I dont know how to put a password to protect my passport

There is a program, located on the WD drive that handles this issue. In essence, it creates a new drive on hook up and you cannot get in without the password. Run the setup program on teh WD drive and it will set it all up for you.

if the external hard disk drive powers on, perhaps replacing the USB cable could help ?

i had WD extrenal, and it crapped out on me -- i had so much vital information that i lost . i finally discovered that the power modeul inside the housing that encases the drive was bad.. i coul not get the PC board replaced.

i hope you can resolve this with new USB cable.

have you tried another computer -- see if that PC recognises the WD external drive

let me know how it works out for you

My mac g5 is not recognising my WD elements extrenal hard drive, this is the first time I have plugged an extrenal hard drive of this sort into my mac. Thanks

My computer does not recognize the Drive.
A: First, check to make sure that all of your connections are secure. Then check if your External Hard Drive is listed in the Apple System Profiler. If the driver listed is “USB Authoring Support” or “Toast USB Support”, disable this Extension(s) in the Extensions Manager. These Extensions can cause a conflict with the Drive.
