1 Answer

My silvia is at least 8 years old and is serviced on a regular basis.

I am very careful with the amount of coffee, the grind, and tamping in the basket and sometimes it comes gushing out. Other times it extract beautifully. What is wrong?

The 'group seal' in the underside of the head that the grounds arm compresses against probably needs replacing. If you unknowingly left a few grounds to dry on the underside of the seal the last time you used the machine, this can be enough to cause a leak the next time around.
If replacing the group seal, replace the 'shower screen' above it as well. Always buy genuine Rancilio parts, you should be able to find both for around $10 - $15 each on Ebay.
There are videos on either You-Tube or Gooble that show how to replace these parts on the Silvia.
Always try to ensure the seal face is cleaned before and after use and the group seal will last longer, but they are actually meant to be replaced whenever necessary, they are not designed to last forever.

Have you ever changed the brwe head gasket? It should be changed yearly at least. They get hard from the heat and won't seal. They should be soft to make a good seal. You can change it your self. I have left post on changing gaskets. Look for Silvia solutions.

SOURCE: Our Silvia, almost 8 years

Try to redo what you have been doing, but set it to the extremes to see if everything is functioning. If you set the grind say to 4, it should come out very slow or maybe not at all.

When I try to make an espresso shot, it runs out very fast and watery.

The coffee needs to be ground finer and tamped harder.

I grind my own coffee. I have never found any supplier that grinds their coffee fine enough.

My Rancilio Silvia, about three years old, does not seem to be generating sufficient pressure. Standard espresso grind requires about two minutes for a shot and coffee is bitter. Is there any way to...

First things first, remove the screw and shower in the head and clean. Then change grind to something a little coarser, since we are testing the machine we will not tamp the coffee(we are doing this to have a constant in our coffee brewing equation). Note how long it took to brew, if it brewed longer than 40 secs, then adjust grind and try again. If coffee shots looks better and taste better then we are on the right track, we are looking for any thing between 15 and 30 sec depending on the coffee blend from light to dark. If you are getting the same results over 40 secs for a shot no matter what grind you use then the pump needs to be replaced.

I bought a used machine. I am not getting really strong, good espresso. How can I do some service checks?

Many factors are involved here. Start with checking your grind, tamp, freshness and quality of the coffee, degree of roast.

Check the shower screen to make sure it is not damaged. Then try this get coffee ground from the store at #2, 3, 4 and 5 at least 1/4 pound each then use that to figure out what setting works best for your machine, also note the tamping pressure. Fill portafilter to rim then tamp to fill ring in basket.

there are two class of expresso coffée: one produce crema and the other none. A 9 sec shot, means you are putting ground coffee that are way too coarse. The Silvia requires coffee grounf extremely fine, near powder texture.
Hope this help
