SOURCE: 6hp Johnson outboard stalls & quits

go to an auto parts store and get a can of gasoline additive called seafoam. Read the label so you know how much to add to your 6 gallon tank. This stuff works wonders on outboard motors.

Sounds like your describing the reed valves. They open on the intake stroke to let the air/fuel mixture into the cylinders.

What is the gap setting for a champion 910 spark plug for a johnson 6hp four stroke outboard motor

if the plug is a standard plug as used in a car , it is the wrong plug
the plug to use is a multi point plug or anti foil plug and the gap is preset
single point plugs such as used in cars motor mowers etc , foul up from the oil / fuel mixture that deposits carbon across the gap so the use of a multi point anti foul plug is recommended in outboard engines
if you persist , for an conventional magneto /coil operation .025" and a later electronic ignition .050"

Check fuel pump diaphragm, could also be stuck needle and seat in carburettor.dont think it is head gasket, would not cause fuel to come out of exhaust.take off carb cover squeeze primer,if fuel comes out of front of carb it is needle and seat.also check if choke is not sticking

I have a 50hp johnson outboard the motor is turning over but I dont seem to get a spark to the plugs

would this help

Primary cause of hard cold start: operator error.

Open gas tank vent, pump primer bulb until it is firm, raise hi-idle lever full up, push the key in and hold it in while turning it to "start".

If you can flood your engine with the primer bulb, then your carbs need rebuilding. Pump the bulb until it is firm - that fills the carb bowls - they have a float valve that closes when full. This is true of every carbureted 2-stroke outboard ever made.

"Pumping the throttle" is useless - these are not automotive carburetors - all it does is open and close the butterfly valves.

Your motor does not have conventional choke plates; instead it has a primer solenoid, which opens a valve and allows fuel to drain into the cylinders to richen up the mixture for cold starts. You should hear the solenoid "click" when you push the key in.

Bad compression leads to hard cold starts - you should have at least 100 PSI in all cylinders, and the lowest needs to be within 5% of the highest.

If you have good compression and spark on all cylinders, the primer solenoid actuates, and the fuel line holds pressure, then you need to remove your carburetors, dissasemble, soak overnight in carb cleaner, blow out passages with compressed air (or aerosol carb cleaner), reassemble with new kits (including new o-rings, gaskets, and float valves & seats), reinstall, link & sync, and adjust slow-speed mixture

check for spark against the block. they sell a test kit, i think harbor freight sells one, where you hook it in line and should be able to see if it is firing or not.

Water coming out of the transmission lever grease fitting

The water discharge hose goes through the case in back of the motor. The hose or fitting could be broke or loose. If not the discharge then the water pump is leaking.
