Question about Water Heaters
Do you know what and where the thermocouple is ? Small probe sitting above pilot flame normally. It should be checked, and should not be expensive to replace. If not familiar with all this, get back to me and I'll explain more thoroughly. Is this a repair your going to try yourself, or just want advice before calling repairman?

this is either the thermocouple lead or the uni control i would replace the thermocouple leed first, these parts can't be repaired they have to be replaced

The Reliance 606 has an enclosed thermal couple. Before you try taking that assembly apart take a wire brush to the bottom opening directly under the burner. There is a metal filter on the very bottom of the water heater. It could be that the filter has gotten filled with dust or animal hair. It took a serviceman 2 days to figure this out for me. The water heater has to have good airflow through that filter to work well.

If you still have your owner's manual, you will need to call the manufacturer. They will need the model # & serial #. This particular brand has a fine mesh filter screen on the bottom (below the burner) that gets clogged and causes irregular pilot outages. They have a recall in which they will send you a new burner assembly with a reset switch built-in to it. They will send it to you for free, but you will need to hire your local propane co (at your expense) to install it and also clean the filter while they have the burner assembly out. Good luck. The thermocouple has gone bad or in this case is going bad to the point that it is useless.
The thermocouple is the pilot's, well, co-pilot! It is the electronic device that senses if the pilot flame is hot enough to ignite natural gas or propane fuel to the burner. If the thermocouple thinks it's safe, then it keeps open the main gas valve located in the pilot assembly. If the thermocouple does not sense enough heat from the pilot flame (such as when the pilot is out), then the thermocouple shuts off the gas valve to the burners.
How the Thermocouple Works
So what is this thing and how does it work? Well the thermocouple (technically called a thermocouple junction) is a device that contains two metal wires welded at the ends and placed inside a protective metal case. The thermocouple sensor is found at the business end of the pilot flame and is designed to be placed in the hottest part of the flame. The other end is connected to the pilot valve body. As the thermocouple heats up, it produces a small amount of electricity and when it gets hot enough from the pilot, send a signal to open the gas valve by using a solenoid operated by a 24 volt transformer. The thermocouple calls the shots, and by converting heat to an electrical signal, it allows the gas valve to open or close. Once the gas valve is open, gas is then constantly supplied to the pilot and as required for the gas burners (as called for by the thermostat). If the pilot goes out, then the thermocouple gets cold and produces no electric signal to open the gas valve's solenoid and the gas valve shuts off the gas supply to the pilot and burners. Neat huh?

it is important to turn off
the gas supply to the water heater at the manual gas shut-off
valve. This valve is typically located beside the water heater.
Note the position of the shut-off valve in the open/on position
then proceed to turn it off.
2. On the lower front of the water heater locate the combination
gas control valve/thermostat. Depress and hold
the lock tab located under the gas control knob on the right.
Rotate the gas control knob on the combination gas control
valve/thermostat clockwise until "OFF" aligns with the mark on
the front of the gas valve. Once the gas supply has been shutoff,
remove outer door. 3. Using a 1/4" nut driver or socket loosen the two screws securing
the manifold door assembly until they are free. Do not
totally remove the screws and plastic retainer washers from
the manifold door. The screws and retainer washers will be
needed to reattach the manifold door. 4. In this step, the thermocouple, manifold tube, pilot tube and
igniter wire will be disconnected from the combination gas
control valve/thermostat. Using a 7/16" wrench
disconnect the thermocouple (left-hand thread) and pilot tube
(right-hand thread). Using a 3/4" wrench disconnect the manifold
tube (right-hand thread). Carefully pull the igniter wire from
the igniter button.
5. Grasp the manifold tube and push down slightly to free the
manifold tube, pilot tube, and thermocouple from the combination
gas control valve/thermostat. when installation is complete and gas is back on, You should be able to relight the pilot and the functionality of your gas hot water heater should be restored.
