Lenovo 3000 Notebooks : N100 Power Failure!

Have a N100 notebook and battery does not recharge and now runs on AC power but would shut off by itself very shortly after switching it on. Brought a new AC adapter and battery straight from the lenovo website, received it, but did not solve the problem. I called lenovo directly they are not sure what could be the cause of the problem. They never heard of this problem. Laptop is only a year or so old, and only use couple hours a day. Wondering if anyone have the same problem and had it resolve, I would appreciate any insights you can offer. Thank you in advance for you help! Hello.
My N100 0768 is running Vusta.  It will not charge the battery and it shuts down at random times but never gets hot.  It lasted 6 minutes the first time I tried to boot it after I got it back from an authorized Lenovo repair shop, and then when I reboot it again it lasted only 3 minutes.
Lenovo replaced the fan, and that resolved the shut down problem for less than 30 days.  Just yesterday, the repair shop replaced the mother board and then the CPU, that did not resolve the problem.  It seems that the longer the laptop is turned off, the longer it will stay on once it is booted.
It does not even stay on long enough for me to backup all my files.  Lenovo wants me to restore it to the factory defaults, and that means I will lose all my programs and all my data.  The shut down occurs even if I do not load Vista.
Can anyone help me resolve the shut down issue? Thank you very much. Peg peggydaly@yahoo.com

    Hi.
Yes, the machine actually shuts down completely.
    Thank you for your help!

I am currently having the same exact problem with my laptop.

    Hi.
Your solution does work for a little while, thank you!  I was able to cool the laptop down using a fan, so I backed up my files and then ran hard drive diagnostics - the hard drive was working just fine.  I sent the laptop back to Lenovo - they replaced the monitor and serviced the fan (again), and reset my laptop back to factory defaults (re-imaged the hard drive).  My laptop shut down less than 10 minutes after I got it home a week later.  I removed the battery, plugged in the ac adapter, and powered on the laptop.  It stayed powered on overnight, but it shut down sometime during the morning on the next day. Lenovo can't find the issue, but I will call them again today.  I will update this post if something interesting happens.

A friend of mine has this same problem. I tried the solution of taking the battery out but it still just shuts off after about 2 minutes.

Has anyone come up with any other solutions?

I have the same problem with my Lenovo 3000 N100 0768-A49. I initially thought it was an OS problem, did a complete reinstallation of Windows XP ... no use. Installed Ubuntu afterwards, still same problem. Removing the battery did not help. Now I'm listening closely to see if I hear my fan. Lenovos are inferior, will NEVER buy another Lenovo.

Class Action Lawsiut is not the way to go Hp had simmiler problems with an Nvidia chipset cooking the board in the F500 series but in there sace the best recourse was small claims courts because the companies lawyers can't be involved

Ok, quick question for troubleshooting purposes. Are you sure that the machine actually shuts down/Off? Do all the lights on the laptop go out as if you have shut it down? If you have the power light still on, then this could indicate a problem with the invertor or the lcd panel itself. Let me know and ill try and help you more.

This seems to be a common problem on Lenovo N100. Lenovo should present a solution or make a recall of the machine in order to keep their reputation

Hi.. I have a temporary solution to your problem. I had the same problem. Remove the battery and the ac adapter from the laptop. Just reconnect the ac adapter without the battery and switch on the lap. Presto.. Problem solved.. It doesnt power off anymore unless u remove the ac adaptor. Usefull if u hav needed files n want 2 create a backup. Still i havent found out a permanent solution to this problem. I suspect its a motherboard fault

I have the same problem. It seems that running on battery it's fine, but if the AC adapter is in the frame at all then it cuts out with no warning. It has taken me a while to come to this conclusion!! It sounds as if a small relay clicks just as the computer trips

Same problem, n100 768 lenovo, did some digging, seems to be a motherboard design fault, but Lenovo refuses to own up to it, what is needed is a Class Action Lawsuit, if anyone hears of one please contact me radisindahouse@yahoo.com
Thank You

I have similar problem with my Lenovo N100. I tried several suggestions provided in this and other threads but none worked.

I have tried to run the laptop just on power code, without battery as suggested by few. It seems, this works for few but not for all.

Too bad Lenovo is not taking any responsibility and coming up with solution. It sucks that now I have buy a laptop just within 2 years but one thing is sure, it won't be Lenovo this time.

Lenovo n100 is 10 minut after power off.

If you are running on battery power and it powers off, then the battery is not fully charged or the battery is worn out or faulty.
Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and after 2 or more years they will lose its charge capacity until it will not charge at all.
A new battery will solve your problem provided the charging circuit in the laptop is OK.

Battery problem

Batteries in portable systems on average last approximately 300 to 500 recharge cycles (Roughly 12 to 18 months) and are considered a consumable item (Hence the 1 year warranty when the rest of the system can have a 3 to 5 year warranty). So your battery replacement is not entirely unusual. If a replacement battery is detected and recharges normally, then stops working after 12+ months of heavy use, the failure is normally the battery.

One thing to check is to see if the battery is under recall:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=BATT-LENOVO

Google shows that Lenovo batteries run about $100 for a N-Series system (4400 mAh) which is about normal pricing for a laptop battery.

Laptop switches of after 5 minutes when on ac power irrespective of power up mode

You may try to uncheck the box under my computer>right click> properties> advanced> startup and recovery.

uncheck the box for automatic restart.

try to blow a can of compressed air into your fan and heat sink channel.

then try to run windows update or go to update.microsoft.com to do so..

Ronald.

Lenovo 3000 n100 won't power up

Hello,

I had posted the Aug 19, 2008 comment about having this problem twice. I tried a new universal AC adapter, and it worked! (new adapter is a Targus APA63US) Now battery is charging and laptop also runs on AC alone. So perhaps it's an adapter problem instead of a battery problem. Get one at a store with a good return policy, so if it doesn't work for you, just return it. And if it does work, then happier days. I've had mine about 2 weeks. So far so good, though with what I've learned about Lenovo since having this problem, it wouldn't surprise me if something else goes wrong, or if the damn thing just blew up, ha ha. Also, this adapter set me back about $100 that I really should not have needed to spend! arrgggh ...

Cheers and Best of Luck and hope this helps other frustrated Lenovo owners!
