Question about Kenmore Ultra High-Efficiency Water Softener

1 Answer

Kenmore water softener leaking from base

Our Kenmore water softener is leaking from the bottom. It is 9 year, almost 10 years old. They were not able to find the warranty and we are not the original owners. I have check all of the connections and hoses and the water appears to be coming directly from the bottom. Does this sound like a crack or could it be something else? I already ordered a new, but now I'm second guessing myself

My Kenmore Ultrasoft 400 water softener tome light will not stop blinking. How do I reset it

It's been 10 years since I worked at EcoWater, but the Kenmore Ultrasoft 400 shouldn't have changed much. The brine tank light shouldn't blink at all. It should light for 4 minutes and then go out if you leave the door open if I remember correctly. How old is your softener and does it have a light bulb or an LED to light up the brine well? It's most likely a damaged control board that's creating your problem. You'll have to contact Sears for a replacement.

(EcoWater Systems LLC is the OEM [Original Equipment Manufacturer] of water softeners for Sears Kenmore, GE, Whirlpool, Morton Salt, EcoWater Systems dealers and a few others.)

Softener is making slight grinding type noise working ok

Either it's getting old and you should start saving for a new one or you need to find a local water treatment dealer who is a Certified Water Specialist (find at WQA.org) to get yours rebuilt. If it's 10 years or older it will likely be cheaper in the long run to replace it. The softener with the fewest moving parts and the longest frequency to first repair also has the longest factory warranty on the electronics and valve: Autotrol. Built by Pentair Residential Filtration.

My water heater is leaking and only 4 years old. Will the use of a water softener void the warranty?

The warranty should not be void by using water softener, BUT read product manual.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html

1) First thing: Why is water heater leaking? Where is the leak?
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html
For example, if you have electric water heater leaking from element, then replace element.
Replace leaking TP valve.
If water is leaking down vent pipe, and combustion chamber rusted out, then vent problem must be corrected.
These are not covered by warranty.
If tank is rusted out, then read below.

2) If water heater is rusted out after 4 years, you might have stray current corrosion.
This happens when hot and cold pipes are not connected together with a ground wire, and/or if cold water pipe is not grounded to earth.
This might not be covered by warranty.

3) Read water heater instruction manual for advisories.
Tanks rust out when anode rod is depleted. Softened water depletes anode rod faster.
Instruction manual says to check anode rod each year.
Checking anode rod is like checking oil on an engine. If oil was never checked and engine burned up, the manufacturer will not honor the warranty.
If anode rod is depleted, and tank is rusted out, the warranty might not cover the rusted tank since owner was supposed to check for anode depletion.

4) Anode rods can also be covered with calcium deposits and stop working.
This night not have anything to do with water softener, but anode stops working and tanks rusts out.
In any case the owner's manual probably says to check anode rod to prevent leaking from rusted tank

I have a hot water heater model # EES 52917. It is 8 years old. The tank has rusted around the top heating element. Why has this happened and what can be done about this issue. From what I understand...

AO Smith is biggest manufacturer and ships about 140,000 units per month sold under different brands. Look at rating on tank. Is it a 9 year tank? Or 6 year? Or lifetime?
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html

Number of factors can cause rust around element:

1) Element is seeping moisture: check and replace element.
Elements can start leaking any time
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-is-leaking.html

2) Anode rod can be depleted from variety of factors including water softener or calcification over anode so it will not work: Check and replace anode rod every 1-2 years with water softener, every 3-5 without water softener. New anode rod will STOP the rust, but will not repair tank that is rusted.
Tanks with longer warranties have 2 anode rods, one on hot water nipple, the other on top of tank.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html

3) Stray current corrosion: add a jumper wire between hot and cold pipes, and make sure tank is grounded. If there is stray current, it will deplete steel in tank if tank is not grounded.
For example one fellow had a tank that rusted out every few years until he discovered his big radio antenna was grounded back to hot water pipe and the tank was not grounded, so the interference depleted his tank.

Is my water heater still under warranty leaking water on top of heater and out from bottom and from plate

1) If water heater is leaking, I suggest you protect yourself first.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Emergency-steps-for-leaking-water-heater.html

2) You have to do some work to find out if tank is under warranty.
-Contact manufacturer: http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html
-Contact installer: If plumber installed heater, then installer backs warranty for some manufacturers. If you installed heater, then warranty is less or void
-Look at paperwork and manual that came with water heater and read about warranty coverage
-Look at markings on tank to see if tank is 6 year, 15 year etc
-Warranty is based on date of manufacture: To find date of water heater, look at serial number located on label on side of tank:
Open link below for serial number decoder by manufacturer.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/WaterHeaterSerialNumberDecoder.pdf

3) If tank is older than 6 years, and tank label shows this is a 6-year tank, then tank is no longer under warranty.
If you have a lifetime tank, then warranty is in effect, so contact manufacturer.

Open following link to see troubleshoot checklist for leaking water heater:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

Other things to consider:
-If tank rusted out after a few years and installer did not install a jumper wire between hot and cold pipes, then tank warranty will probably not cover tank.
-If tank rusted out and you have water softener, and did not inspect anode rod or maintain water heater, then you did not read manual or maintain heater, and warranty might not cover problem.
-I suggest you read water heater manual cover to cover so water heater will not start leaking.

What is the expected useful life of a Reliance 40 gallon electric water heater? Is there a maintenance step that can be taken to ensure that there is no build-up of contaminants on the elements?

The average life expectancy of any water heater relates directly to its warranty. 1 year- 1year, 6 years-6 years. If you use the water heater past its warranty, you are really making money on the purchase.

Installing a new anode rod is about the only maintenance step you can take. However, this does not guaranty that you will not accumulate build up.

Draining the water heater once a year helps a little bit with buildup in the bottom of the tank but not the elements.

The ultimate solution is to install a water treatment system, not just a water softener. They are somewhat expensive, but well worth the cost in the long run-10 to 15 years.

Bleach despenser not working? soap and softener

Hello. Most likely your water inlet valve is the problem. If you are mechanically inclined you can change this yourself. That said, if your machine is less than two years old it is still under warranty. If so, call for service at Sears.com

Hi,my name is PK I have 5 tons Rheem air handling 10 year old. it is vertical type. How to fix the leak at evapolator coil. it leaked at the bottom right side. Can I use epoxy to seal this leak.Or replace...

Epoxy wont hold you need a new coil. about 8 to 12 hundred depending on your location. If it is 10 years old I would suggest you change the air handler. You will get a lot more efficient unit. Cost about 2200 but you will get a 10 year warranty from most manufacturers. Dont buy one unless you get a 10 year warranty. Russ
