Question about Gateway 500XL PC Desktop

500XL will not shutdown properly!

I own a CZZ 500XL Gateway Desktop. There is currently no support for this model on Gateway's website. The problem is that ~95% of my attempts to shutdown my computer via the start menu, it will go through the entire process with seemingly no difficulty but then restart instead of shutting down. There is no "freezing" or "locking up" that occurs, it simply just almost always restarts rather then shuts down. What's odd is that there is an extremely rare occurrence of the Gateway to actually shut down but it happens so rarely that I haven't had a chance to figure out whats different. The only information I was able to find that "may" be somehow related to this problem is some gateway owners reported a hardware issue with the actual power button that would cause a similar issue. I also read that certain software like Roxio CD DVD creator may create this problem (although I have tried updating my drivers for this software with no luck). Any Ideas?

Re: 500XL will not shutdown properly!

The above Solution did not seem to change my problem with the shut down, however, after making the change to my BIOS several drivers that were not working properly including DirectX now function perfectly! For instance, several programs that use directX were not detecting that I use a wide-screen monitor and would not offer wide-screen resolutions. This has been fixed =)

Re: 500XL will not shutdown properly!

Firstly you need to get into the bios by pressing f2 or Del on start up and when in the bios look in the advanced menu for ACPI and meke sure that it is enabled, this allows the motherboard to recognise the auto shutdown through windows, then save settings and exit for a re boot. Next click start>control panel>power options and check in the power schemes and other tabs, to make sure that the settings are correct for shutting the system down.

Need memory for Gateway Desktop Model (GM) MFATXPNT MDW500X computer made in the fall of 2003. Where can I find memory for a model this old?

Go to Crucial.

It is very easy to use, just select the manufacturer and model number from the drop down list, and it'll tell you everything you need to know, AND offer you some pretty good deals on memory direct from them.

My gateway 500xl won't power on

The first thing I would try is connecting a new power supply. If you can borrow one from a friend/neighbor/family member/whatever that would be the easiest/cheapest thing to try first. Also make sure all the wires are connected to the right places and securely connected.

Need to replace video card

It would be the card that your monitor plugs into. If the monitor plugs straight into the motherboard, then all you need to do is add a video card and it should automatically bypass the built in one on the motherboard. Thanks and please take a moment to rate this solution with a fixya rating. :c)
