  • Open the garage doorhow do i set the travel limits on my craftsman gar - icon1.png fully by pressing the wall control button. The bottom section of the door should be right at the header in the "full open" position. If it is too far back, the door cable can become misaligned. If it is not back far enough, you may not be able to get your vehicle in and out of the garage.

Position a stepladder behind the garage door openericon1.png motor. Locate the limit adjusting screws on the left side of the motor housing. Have a friend stand by the wall control button.

Close the garage door by having your helper push the wall control button. Notice the seal between the door and the floor--there should not be any light coming through. Adjust the "down limit" screw in the same way if necessary.

HBW077 Craftsman: door travels downward only 10"

Sounds like you have a bad RPM sensor board. This is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor. It's job is to reverse the door when it hits an obstacle but will act as you describe when they go bad. The part number is 41C4398A and is available at Sears or any good door service company.

It sounds like the door is traveling too far in the down direction. When it hits the floor the safety causes it to reverse to the open position. You need to adjust the 'down limit' not the force.

My Craftsman garage door opener opens fine. It

It could be closing too far or the sensitivity could be set too sensitive.

Lube the springs, wd-40 rust may be the whole problem.

If the door hits and the opener continues to move until the rail flexes upward and then reverses - probably the travel adjustment.

Does the door close and stay closed if you hold the wall button down constant until it closes? - this would indicate a safety eye problem.

If the door reverses before it hits the floor or just as it hits the floor it could be the sensitivity or if the safety eyes are mounted to the track they could be flexing enough to move the eyes out of alignment.

    Hope this helps.

TAKE OFF THE COVER & SEE IF THE LIMITS ARE WORKING CORRECTLY.

IF THEY ARE AND THERE IS JUST NOT ENOUGH TRAVEL YOU MAY NEED TO REMOVE THE CHAIN AND REINSTALL IT 4 OR 5 LINKS OVER THIS WILL INCREASE THE LIMIT.

    Door will not stay closed

Remove the cover and take a look at the limit switch assembly. It pretty much snaps together and it sounds like a part has come loose.

THE TRAVEL ADJUSTMENT IS ON THE SIDE.
YOU MAY BE ADJUSTING THE SENSITIVITY (TRAVEL LIMIT HAS NO MAX ADJ.)
BE SURE TO RESET THE SENSITIVITY ADJUSTMENT TO ABOUT 1/4

    Craftsman door opener

Does the door touch the floor? If so your down limit needs to be decreased.

Does it open back up mid-travel? If so your down pressure needs to be increased.

Read your manual about setting the safety reverse system if you change any settings.
