Question about Water Heaters

Creda 850DL Shower loss of heat - Only High Temperature lled is coming on and the lower power led - middle is not on now

The shower has had this problem twice now. First time I replaced the heating canister and it seemed to fix the problem as it was an element confirmed by the creda engineer who came to examine the shower but couldnt fit the item. Same problem has occurred now 2 months later. Surely the canister couldnt have failed again. The basic issue is the heat is no longer as strong as it was. I have also noticed the only the lower power led is on and the high led. The Mid temperature led is not on suggesting that either a microswitch is not working or the element in the heater has gone again? Not being a shower expert i was hoping for some advice on this before i get the multimeter out and test the microswitch and heater elements as the Creda engineer seemed to be at a loss as well. The same problem occurred with a Creda 950DL so perhaps it is a manufacturer fault.

After some electrical tests today and analysing the circuit diagram it could only really be a faulty microswitch , heater element burned out usually the left hand one or a pcb failure - in my case it was the microswitch sticking - cleaned it and squirted it with wd40 and now is well case closed no need to buy a new shower.

Turns out this is a maufacturing issue with all Creda and other showers. The microswitches are attached to the ccase by a small plastic pin which over use weakens then snaps causing the microswitch to fall and stop working. FIxing it is easy by rdrilling the case and replacing the broken plastic pin with a metal pin or cut nail. Make sure to either melt it into the plastic or araldite it!!!

SOURCE: shower will not heat up

May have a tripped thermal overload or blown fuse. Some overloads reset automatically but some will have a red button to reset it with. Some have to be replaced.

SOURCE: Just replaced both elements to my reliance electric heater..heats fine but after 1 shower i have to reset red button and repeat process daily Whats up? thanks

Replace thermostats.
One of the thermostats is sticking causing overheating that trips ECO reset located on upper thermostat. There is no good way to test thermostats since testing means turning the temperature setting which temporarily unsticks bad thermostat so it looks like it works ok, so replace both thermostats.

Hot water varies

I do not know how old this unit is or what model but many water heaters are not sophisticated enough to measure the temperature, but heat based on water flow and temperature rise. To start, tankless water heaters turn off every time you turn the hot water off. Lets use an example. You use the facilities, wash your hands then turned off the water and take a shower. You will bring the already heated water (from washing your hands) from the pipe up to the shower. Then the cold water that comes into the pipe from the reactivation of the water heater comes up the hot water pipe with warm then hot water just behind.

If this is not your problem, keep reading. Every unit I have been called to see were installed wrong. Check your installation manual to see if the problem with the system started with the contractor.

First, check the temperature of the water from the heater. If it is too hot and you are mixing too much cold water in, the unit will turn off because there is not enough water flow to keep it running.

Second, turn off the valve at the water heater and turn on the hot water at a faucet. If the water does not stop running, there is a "plumbing cross over" usually caused by a failing pressure balance valve in a shower.

Third, if the unit has not been serviced, go to bosch-climate.us to find a tankless water heating professional in your area. Totally Tankless LLC

My water heater heats everything except my lower shower

Let's walk our way thru this one: I assume you have an upstairs shower, and a downstairs shower?-- Are you able to follow the pipes coming out of the Hot Water Heater?-- Can you trace where the pipes to the upstairs shower go?-- And what about the pipes to the lower shower? -- Do they BOTH come off the HOT water pipes coming out of the top of the HW Heater?
A big help in tracing pipes, is by having the hot water run in the Shower that is getting HOT water-- Feel the HOT! pipe?-- Now-- shut that water off, and go to the lower shower-- When it is running, can you hear water flowing out of the pipes at the top of the Hot Water Tanks?-- or do you feel Cold water moving-- Can you travels where it is flowing from? Get back with me, and tell me what you are feeling, and hearing-- Mack B

I have a Potterton Combi Puma 80e When I use the shower the pressure seems to drop and shower goes cold! except when the central heating is on shower works fine

Does the red status led in the centre of the control board come on when hot water is drawn? You need to remove ONLY the front decorative cover to see the control board, two fixing screws at the base of it. If not the boiler won't fire when the CH is off.
The trigger for this is a pressure switch, replacement of which is beyond DIY scope.

I have model AH21 Tankless Water Heater and it is not heating the water

try these steps - hope it helps
  • Selected temperature on your tankless water heater is too high. Select the lower temperature.
  • Inlet filter is dirty... clean it.
  • Make sure that there are no water path obstructions, including faucet aerators, shower heads...
  • Is the heater using the specified gas type?
  • Temperature sensors are loose... ensure that sensors are firmly mounted and are making contacts.

Water heaters by Rheem have not changed that much over the years. the link below will give you some good information about electric water heaters in general. As water heaters age, the heating element will lose efficiency due to deposits and general build-up of minerals in the tank. Turning up the temp may not be a good idea since the problem is actually caused by a coating on the element. Also make sure that cold water is not bleeding into shower valves thru other single lever faucets. While shower is running, listen to and feel the water lines connected to sink faucets in other rooms for water transferring thru valve. You can actually hear water running at faucet while shower is on if faulty. If other vaucet valves are leaking thru, repair those first before you do anything to the water heater as that is cause of loss of hot water. Good luck.

I am guessing this is an ele water heater and the temp setting are not the problem.
Problem: Not enough hot water or water temperature too low. When the top of the tank is hot the upper thermostat removes power from the upper heating element and transfers the power to the lower thermostat and heating element. If the lower thermostat is defective, then the lower portion of the tank will not be heated and the supply will be greatly reduced.
Check for power at the upper thermostat terminals where the power is sent to the lower thermostat and heating element. If there is no power then the upper thermostat should be replaced. If there is power then check for power at the lower heating element. If there is no power at the lower heating element then replace the lower thermostat.
If there is power to the lower heating element then it should be getting hot. If it is not, replace it. Another possibility is a broken dip tube. Check for a broken dip tube and replace if necessary.

The dip tub is located under the fitting where the hot water comes out.

Water turns cold very quickly

I had the EXACT same problem (installed my tankless last winter and worked fine, now this summer it fluctuates, have to turn the shower completely off and then on again to get any hot water and then it only lasts for a couple of minutes!) Argh - it is frustrating!

Here's what I found: the demand for hot water is lower during the summer (hot) months because the "cold" water coming in is already quite warm. You don't need as much hot water to make the shower temp comfortable. SO, my tankless was shutting off due to low flow demand. I've removed the flow restrictor from my shower head and it helped alot but didn't completely solve the prob. Next step is what has been recommended to me by several people but is much more expensive - change the pressure valve on your shower to a temperature valve. Or just wait til winter and it should work ok again :)

Warm water only

You can eliminate the shower control knob possibility by turning on your hot water anywhere else in the house. If you get hot water in other places, then it could be the knob causing it. A substantial lime buildup in the tank can also cause poor heat transfer from the elements to the water.

Water temperature varies while useing the hot water during a normal shower. jg

Try this before replacing the shower diverter valve.

If this problem is isolated to the shower only, then I would suggest that the shower diverter valve is equipped with an "Anti-scald" safety feature that can not be adjusted, however the temperature regulator/thermostat on the water heater can be adjusted to a lower temperature so as to not activate the the "Anti-scald".
