The process of installing the driver is not proper. If you download the driver from the Acer's site extract it (make sure to remember when it was extracted), look on the destination where it was save then run the ".exe" file to install the driver.
Hi bertyboo, Acer does not have sound drivers for Vista.
However your Aspire 1640Z notebook should be able to use the RealTek driver included in the link below. The download button is located at the right side of the page. u have came cd with a laptop drvier & utility cd put in cd rom drive it will autorun there was option on sound click on it setup will run
if dont have cd then u can download & install from the by clicking on acer aspire 1640z
Have you checked the sound settings? If so, then i'm going to lean towards a bad driver download, corrupt driver, or the wrong driver. Rarely the speakers will go out or the connectors will work loose, but this is a possibility also.
