Cursor jumps back to previous text and volume control not working

I have had problems with this laptop since it was purchased in July 2008. Since then I have also noticed that the volume control doesn't work properly and is obviously faulty as it doesn't respond appropriately. The main problem I have, this one being the most annoying and frustrating, is that when I am typing any kind of document, be it email, word document, or simply writing on a website forum, the cursor repeatedly jumps back in the text. Even whilst I am typing this message the cursor has jumped back at least 6 times and I have had to go back and correct what has been typed. Its driving me mad!! Can anyone help please? I have read somewhere that you can disable 'tapping' in the mouse properties but I don't seem to have this option on my machine

Sorry but I have got exactly the same problem. I have reinstalled my Word and Excel software as at first I thought it was that. Whilst typing this the cursor highlight and area and removed it. Also when typing if I hit the spacebar to many times it moves the cursor downwards to the middle of the page even though its not the end of the document. I did try checking the Synaptics Device but its a pain also doing Fn +F7 to turn off the touch pad as suggested. Sorry not got an answer other than send it back. The bleeping thing just down it again, this time when I stopped for a minute to think.

On my laptop, the cursor jumps unpredictably to previously entered text.

The space bar 'contacts', internally are dirty or defective. You will probably need to replace the keyboard or seek from manufacturer a 'cleaning process ' for this keyboard.

Cursor skipping and jumping back into previously typed text

Hello,

Have a D600 myself and found anothe post that worked for me!

First, my problem was replying to emails the cursor would jump when typing usually back up into the middle of the text somewhere.

If this is similar, read on.

First, go to Dell's website, downlaod the latest driver for the Alps Touchpad: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R113813&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D600&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2514&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=7&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=17&fileid=149404

Download the driver but do not install yet. Note, this is for a Dell Latitude D600, Windows XP. Vista may have a different driver.

Open Control Panel/Mouse/TouchPad Tab/Touch Sensitivity Button. Open Touch Sensitivity, adjust below the halfway point on the slider. Try different settings, you may also want to check the "Tap off when typing" box.

If you do not show these properties as above, you probably don't have the latest driver installed. In that case, install the driver you downloaded above then come back and refer to the instructions.

I spend 90% of my day on this D600 and really love it, not a speed demon, but light enought to carry with one hand and is a great email/browser machine as you probably already know!

Before installing tis driver

Cursor unstable.shooting about

hi, welcome to fixya

if you customize your cursor then that might be a problem because your Norton might detect something wrong in using your cursor. and the another problem is that you install for the customized cursor to run.

please un install your cursor customizing program at your control panel, in add/remove program.

hope this can help you.

God Bless.

Cursor jumps erratically

Most likely, your wrist is gently touching the touchpad, and your computer is interpreting it as a 'tap,' and it so happens your cursor was located several lines up.
Or if you use a separate mouse, is it on a wood or uneven surface? This will cause it to jump up those few lines and again, your wrist (or if you have big hands like I do, the bottom of your thumbs) will tap it.
