Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Sta-rite well pump. My pipes froze and now I have a leak. When I plugged in the pump to check which pipe was leaking it cuts on and off every 2-4 seconds. If fixing the leak does not fix this what should I look for?

Is the pump above ground or in the well ?
If its above ground, sounds like you have air in the pump which will not let it operate properly, if you fix the leak, you will have manually fill the pump with water from the access hole on top of the pump, its takes time and patients to do this as I used to live in Northern MN, and was on a well too, once in a while I would have to prime the pump do to water loss somewhere in the system, if it is a pump that is down inside the well, you will have to call your local well driller and inquire as to the cost of diagnostics and repair, hope this was helpful, thanks for your Question,

Where to add water to prime pump ds3hf-01 sta rite

water is filled in the body of the pump to prime it
fill the filter housing if that is part of the pump
make sure that there is no open pipes /hoses or air leaks on the suction side of the pump and that includes any vacuum machine hoses floating on the water surface

Well pump losing prime

you might have a leak in the foot valve, you can try installing a check valve several inches before the intake to maintain a prime, or check and clean/replace the foot valve.

If the pump ran dry, check the inlet fitting. the pump can get hot and melt pvc piping connected to it, causing air to leak in the inlet side.,

Sta-Rite leaks out of backwash pipe.

not a good idea to switch valve when pump is running. you could try rebuilding the valve wit a kit and some magic lube. mark the valve with a marker or a file so you can be sur to reasemble it right

My in-ground pool pump...Sta-rite 11/2 hp...leaks at the outlet fitting. Changed fitting twice, using teflon tape as recommended...still leaks.

I don't recommend Teflon tape as it places outward pressure on the pump and can cause the pump body to crack. and if that happens the pump body will need to be replaced. I use black RTV silicone. smooshing it into the threads of both fittings and hand tightening the fitting.. then the glue the pipe as normal
REMEMBER to prime the pump after any pump repair !!
Teflon tape works well on metal pump like well and irrigation, they are a high pressure pump and are generally cast iron tanks.

The motor is running OK, but it won't pump the water

a suction leak will cause the pump not to prime... check the lid gasket, lid for cracks, pipes and valves. you can rap the fittings with electrical tape, to help you locate leaks.. a shaft seal is a good start, this will allow you to ree the condition of the impeller . it may be plugged, also see if there is cracks in the hair basket it will allow trash to get into the impeller

It wont hold its prime , changed out the foot valve and still wont hold its prime

If it's not leaking back through the foot valve, then it must be leaking out someplace else upstream of the pump. It's remotely possible that it's siphoning off from the draw downstream of the pump (if that is significantly lower in elevation than the pump) - but I don't think that could happen unless you had air leaking into it someplace. Just food for thought. I don't know the ups and downs of your piping.

The noise sounds like a much louder humming sound; Temperatures were well below freezing here last night

I'm not sure what your humming is much louder than. But if you had a freeze your pump may have froze and you will need to ck for leaks after thawing. You could have cracked your pump or hurt the seals. After you check for this, you can check for a weak start capacitor in your motor, as the cold can affect these also. Good luck.

2 hp vertical sta-rite well pump

Did you prime the pump? To prime: Before turning pump on, unscrew plug cap from top of pump (usually on pump impeller housing,) and with a pitcher or garden hose, fill pump full of water, and replace plug. Then turn pump on and see if problem is solved. If leaking: Are all fittings tight, O-rings and seals new, and is there any pipe thread tape on all threads w/o seals?
