To get a reading of your radios RF ouput, requires a dummy load test.

I somehow doubt that this is causing the heating of your radio.

All large radios, as yours is, have a built in heat sink, with a fan usually installed, depending on the model and output wattage of the transmitter unit.

The fact you say it gets very hot, indicates that the fan may be the culprit, and will need cleaning and/or replacement.

I hope this is helpful to you. Anything else you need to know about your radio should be directed here: join yahoo group SPECIFIC to your radio Make/Model, there you will get expert advice and info, also you can download manuals, diagrams and software for you radio.

You have a great radio, look after it and it will give you many hours of enjoyment.

Kind regards,

SOURCE: My Yaesu ft-100 has a problem on the UHF band.

You have probably a faulty VHF/UHF relay. It is RL5016 in LPF unit.

Why does the unit does not seam to work on SSB?

Since everything else works then is it USB or LSB or both? Did you check the power output when your in SSB and if there isn't any you can expect the drive transistors. Try putting the radio into the RTTY or CW mode and see if there is any power output when you key the mike PTT.

Good luck,

I have a kenwood ts690s not transmitting full power

AM will only give to about 40W without modulation. This is the RF Carrier required for the AM Mode. This is because the RF Carrier is modulated by your voice, and when speaking into the mic, the voice peaks will increase the output to about 80W if not measured with a peak reading wattmeter. All radios will work like this in AM.

SSB requires audio to get any RF output. If your microphone is defective, or your MIC GAIN control is fully counter clockwise, you will get no output power when you speak into the mic. Output power, if not measured with a peak reading wattmeter will bounce to about 80W on voice peaks.

MOST wattmeters are not peak reading.

My radio shows power but its not transmitting out and shows only5 watts on a meter

Don't rely on that meter. use a good Known external meter to check.. make sure your mode switch is on am... not any other mode. also try a different mic. New mics start --RK56's$38.99/Stock mics$6.99...

Cobra 18 wx st receives-wont transmit

Take the cover off, flip it over solder side up, check all solder joints for cracks, cold solder joints, check the safety diode where it comes in the radio, before I go further, can you pick up the weather channel?...Does the PA work?...need to check the pre-driver and finals, audio chip, hook up the power meter using a coax three foot jumper from the output from radio to the input of the watt meter, then the antenna, first check the SWR, on the scale on the meter to cal/swr mode, adjust it to spec, then while still keyed down turn the dial to SWR,if it is the safe range your ok,then turn the Dial to 10 or 20 watt scale and key the mic. Does it have any wattage? If not suspect the finals, they are located on the back rail, if it does have RF then its the audio chip, its located on the right side rail facing you, closest to you.remove it and replace it with same ....hope this helps....

1 Answer won't come on.(red & black wire show short!)

The fault is probably at either end. Yes, it could have been reversed, but most radios are easily protected against this.

If you are getting no lights or anything when keying mic, then there may be an inline fuse along the cable. As you are getting continuity, open the case up, and look for any evidence of heat at the components nearest the power supply - particularly the protection diodes - Black cylinrical components with a silver band.

You really need a meter or scope to go in much further, and check supply voltages between components and -ve, and downloading a copy of the circuit diagram will help this.

The other main fault is usually the output power transistor - which needs a sink for all the power getting thrown at it. If you remove the antenna, it can quickly overheat and fail.
Both components can be checked in-situ for voltage (or not) but the output can only be tested with a scope.

Of course - the "on" light could have blown, so may be functioning without indications, - but I doubt it.

Also check Mic outputs on the plug to make sure that is working. Some units won't function if this is disconnected.
