Problem for Nikon D40x Digital Camera

My D40x shows a message Lens not attached

My D40x camera with lens18-55mm not allow pictures to be taken if it is in the automode, and shows the message "Lens Not Attached" but works as manual (M) mode setting on the camera, but is poor the quality of the pictures.

Please help me
