Question about Computers & Internet
There is software that may be able to scan the drive to get the files. You are looking for data recovery software I would suggest talking to a local store or technician as a lot of the online software does not work or are Trojans or bloatware. Unless you really need the files off it maybe more trouble than it is worth. It can be time consuming and you don't always get full file recovery.

A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

This is a common problem. IF the external was unplugged during a operations, there is a possibility of hard drive corruption. Also, you mentioned it was on a MAC. If your buddy formatted the drive for the MAC (Which would be HSF) so PC won't see the filesystem anymore until you reformat for PC (FAT or NTFS). I understand you might not was to reformat, but that is my recommended answer to this issue. There is one other choice though. Try googling Diskwarrior. This program is pretty good at repairing corrupted harddrives and it pretty good at detecting filesystems. If disk warrior doesn't do the trick, I would go with reformating.

SOURCE: can not access my hard disk
Thanks for the prompt reply. Your external hard drive enclosure has one of three cable types to connect to your laptop. Is that USB, Firewiare or eSATA?
You have XP or Vista on your Laptop?
When you connect your external enclosure to your laptop you should hear a tone indicating Windows has recognized a new external storage device. Is this not happening, first of all?
So, give me the cable type used to connect to your laptop and whether Windows recognizes your external storage device with a tone and Alert Pop Up, and then Windows wants to format it because its not seeing the hard drive correctly?

If your hard drive is recognized by your computer try opening control panel,to administrative tools,to Computer management,to storage, to disk management,by right clicking on drive you can format that drive or delete it.
