In theory you could locate the AUDIO pin from the back of the mic jack, and add a resistor from there to the center pin of the ext speaker jack in the same manner as you would a PA jack.  But look into more before you do as I have never done it that way and Unidens sometimes have a funky way of wiring their boards.  If I had one laying around I would try it out but I don't.  best of luck!

Solder one end of a 180 to 200 ohm half watt resistor to the negative pin of the External Speaker Jack (on the pc board). Solder the other end to the chasis of the radio. This wont do anything harmful to the radio. It will give you talk back. If the volume of the talk back is too low, reduce the value of the resistor until you have a comfortable level. Keep in mind that if you reduce the value too much, you will get feedback from the speaker that will drive you and everyone else crazy. If you get the volume correct and have a bit of feedback, you can connect a low value electrolytic capacitor (2.2 uF) across the speaker leads to filter off some high frequencies and reduce or stop the feedback. This works on MOST Cobra and Uniden CB's as well as mant Cybernette CB's like Lafayette, Colt and HyGain. Brands

Why doesn't my radio operate in the "PA" mode?

Some radio's do this (specifically Uniden) for some unknown reason. Ideally you plug a speaker into the PA output and when you switch to PA mode, the CB transceiver part should turn off and only your voice should come out of the PA EXT speaker to make it act like a personal megaphone.

  • Turn volume down
  • Switch cb/pa switch to pa
  • speak into mic

You have a bad microphone. There is most likely a broken wire in the microphone jack.

Without a microphone the radio will not go into receive mode, at all. Same thing happens when there is a disconnected wire in the mic cord. Because the radio you have, has Talkback in it, you can always hear a little audio coming through, but not a lot.

Try a new mic or one you know is good.

I want talkback on my cobra 29ltd classic radio how do i do this myself

Open the case on your radio. Solder a 100 ohm resistor between the pa jack and ext speaker jack. You can add a switch if you like to turn it on and off. The lower the resistance, the louder the talkback.

WANT TO ADD TALKBACK IN A RADIO

A 200 ohm 1-watt resistor across pins 1 & 4 of the mic jack will make some talkback. More or less resistance will make less or more talkback. Note the association of less and more.
