Shredder won't run

This Staples SPL-1506X crosscut shredder quit working. It is well past warranty so I took it apart. With it unplugged and while apart I cheated the cutoff switch and removed the sensor connector from the circuit board. I plugged it back in and put it in shred mode and it ran for just a second or two. It may have quit because of sensing the bin to be full - I don't know. I did not think to check it in reverse. I put it back together and it worked so I shredded some papers.

Then I took it back upstairs to my office and was going to shred more but it wold not work again. I took it back to my workshop and took it apart again. Now it won't work at all.

The green power light goes on and stays on but the motor is not running in either forward or reverse. If I put paper in it a click sounds so I know the sensor is working.

- I have received two solutions:

The first said "try first unplugging power cable for five minutes."
The shredder has been unplugged and replugged multiple times since the problem began.
This was no help.

The second said, "check the connection once again .... "
What connection. All connections seem to be OK.

Still need help.

I had similar problem. I took unit apart and checked the motor by hotwiring it after checking voltage coming off the circuit board connections that the motor is connected to. Motor did not run until I tapped it a couple times with a hammer. Seems ok now.

Once it powers on there is no electrical problems and fuses are fine.
Most common problem for shredders to get stuck is the paper jammed in the corner. Check it one more time for tighny paper pieces.
Also maybe good idea to use the shredder with another paper bin to see if it is working. If it works look for the problem in bin assembly.
If still no help, motor itself is bad. Futhrer repair is not worthy.
Good Luck

hiya there!

you have done:
1. checking all the connections, you have turned off and on the power.
2. did you tried shredding in reverse?
3. did you tried shredding few papers?
4. is the sensor still working?
5. did you empty the bin?

Pls check if there are some little metal stuffs from the inside that preventing the shredding, such as small wires, bunch of little papers that stucked within it. if the power is on, but the motor is not working, either forward or reverse, make a thorough cleaning and do it again from the basic.

hope it works! good luck!

The safety power relay on the main circuitboard has failed.

Even though you hear the click of the switch - the relay is not engaging to allow the power to flow to the motor.

If you have the expertise, jumper the relay and verify the motor still works.

Unfortunately, the relay will be a bear to find, (if at all) and your best option is to purchase a new unit.

Thanks for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated!!

i would say it time to get a new shredder rather than waste more time trying to fix one that may or may not continue to work. they arent very expensive and it will save you time and frustration in the long run. they cost less than 40.0 now at wal mart
