S-Video is a media type that only carries video. Unfortunately the LG unit was designed only to be a self contained surround sound unit. There are only video outputs to the television on this unit. Because of the unit having surround sound capabilities, LG felt that their wasn't a need for audio output. You would need to buy a new DVD player to allow audio from the DVD to your new Yamaha unit. Good Luck!

My center and surrond sound speakers don't work with just one output from my dvd do I need to purchase an amplifier also?

You need to first check whether your dvd player supports dolby 5.1. If it supports that then you could connect the digital output of your dvd player to a surround receiver such as Yamaha RX-661. You can then connect all the speakers to the output of RX-661 which has 7 inbuilt amplifiers for all the channels. Its a 7 channel receiver and would be useful with DVD-Audio and such that comes in 7 channels. For your requirement any 5 channel receiver will do. Please let me know if you need any more clarifications.

Sub doesnt do anything while plugged in ( Sunfire mk II)

Some subwoofers can sense the signal on their input and will only start when there's enough signal for long enough time for them to turn on the amp.

Try seting the "subwoofer signal out" on your reciever a bit higher, see if it does the trick, if not, try it with some other source (e.g. an mp3 or CD/DVD player) plugged directly into the subwoofer. If it still doesn't work, there's some other problem with your sub (bad connection inside sub, sub amplifier problems, maybe there's another fuse for the speaker itself, try to check it out).

If it works well with an alternate signal source, the problem might be either in reciever or the signal cable that you use, but could also be something else.

good luck

Yes, these speakers need an amplifier. So unless your DVD player features an amplifier, then you will need separate 5.1 receiver, for example Yamaha RX-V365 or RX-V465 (which supports audio via HDMI input).

unfortunately outside of turning down the volume. there isnt anything you can do. the reason that is is because its the networks own volume preferences that cause that. the only way you can fix is it call them and tell em to turn down the damn commercials. lol. sorry

Yamaha NX-SW300 sub woofer

Yes, that type of connector is often used for a VGA signal for a computer monitor. But in this case it is an all-in-one connector Yamaha used in order to simplify the hookup of this home theatre system. Unfortunately, the subwoofer is only usable with the DVR-S300 receiver/DVD player.

Have u pressed the dvd/cd button on the dvd remote? I have had this set up for over 12 months and never had a problem with it. We have had my laptop connected to it playing mp3s from it through media player, had the karaoke machine connected up to it through the surround sound. It also plays mp3 cds which u may have created yourself.

Surround sound from Sky +

To upmix 2-channel sound (such as that in a TV broadcast) into 5.1 sound, press AMP and then SUR. DECODE until "PL II Movie" is displayed. This will give you "cinema-like" surround sound from a 2-channel source.

You can also assign this to one of your "Scenes" by following the procedure for scene assignment on page 26 of your manual.
