You WILL have to get an upgraded antenna and converter to be able to watch the new HDTV standard. There is no back door or any other way around it. Point blank get a new antenna and converter.

SOURCE: trouble receiving local channels on TV using new Magnavox converter box

Your digital converter box probably does not have an analog pass through that allows the old analog channels to go through to the tv's analog tuner.

What is a converter box for tv

2_21_2013_6_27_22_pm.jpg
A digital television adapter (DTA), or digital-to-analog converter [set-top box], or commonly known as a converter box, it is a television tuner that receives a digital television (DTV) transmission, and converts the digital signal into an analog signal that can be received and displayed on an analog television set. It may refer to over-the-air broadcast television signals received by an television antenna, or to cable TV systems which switched to digital cable. It normally does not refer to satellite TV, which has always required a set-top box either to operate the big satellite dish, or to be the integrated receiver/decoder (IRD) in the case of direct-broadcast satellites (DBS).

In North America, these ATSC tuner boxes convert from ATSC to NTSC, while in most of Europe and other places such as Australia, they convert from Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) to PAL. Because the DTV transition did nothing to reduce the number of broadcast television system standards (and in fact further balkanized it), and due to varying frequency allocations and bandplans, there are many other combinations specific to other countries.

I hooked up an antenna but I don't get a signal...do I need a box for my DS24425?

vzalutka,
Your model TV was built with a analog receiver. Last year in June there was a change over to digital broadcasting which left your TV unable to view over-the -air signals without a digital decoder. You will need to purchase a box. I included two site to visit for more information.

Hitachi 57G500A DTV & upcoming analog to digital changeover

To answer your direct question, yes it has a digital tuner. To answer your real question, NO it WILL NOT receive the new ATSC (digital) broadcast stations. The tuner itself is a digital one but works only for analog signals. The changeover in February will change the broadcast signals to a new digital format that will require a converter for your set to continue to function. Please note that the converter is only required if you receive your signal from rabbit ears or a rooftop antenna. If connected to cable or satelite, no change will be seen and no converter is needed.

To simplify:

Over air reception = need converter
Cable or satelite = no converter

the model you listed will receive digital rf signals without the need for a converter box. the link below is a link to the owners manual for your set, in it you will see what to do to get your local station once the television signals switch to all digital broadcasts.

Converter boxs

If you have cable or satelite service, no converter is needed for either one. The only time a converter is required is if you receive the TV signal from an antenna (over-air). The DS19130 WILL require a converter for over-air broadcasts. I think that the DS25530 will as well, but I am not 100% sure. Because of its age, I would suspect that a converter will be required for hte DS25530.

Digital signal conversion

If you have cable TV, satellite TV, or FIOS, the coupon eligible converter boxes aren't needed and aren't useful with those services.
They gov't coupon converter boxes are only good for reception with a regular TV antenna or rabbit ears.

According to the specs on epinions.com, no, this TV does not have a digital tuner. So, if you use a rooftop TV antenna (not satellite dish) or an indoor TV antenna, you WILL need an ATSC to NTSC converter box. You need not wait until next year, however, as most U.S. TV stations are also broadcasting digital (ATSC) now.
