Acer l100 will not boot up

Seems to start up when it wants to. It's not overheating because it has been off all night.

    What is it doing when it will not start up? Do you hear one beep from the case or more when having problems? And what operating system is on it? That is a newer model pc so I'm sure it's Vista, but I would just like to make sure.

To all of those out there with an Acer Aspire L100 SFF that has decided it will no longer boot -
Symptoms: fans spin up, DVD spins up, possibly HD spinning up - no power, HD or network lights on front panel.
Previous Fixes: Changing out 3 capacitors on the mainboard, re-seating memory and processor.
I tried all three of the fixes above and still no joy. I discovered to my surprise that this PC, due to it's heat "issues", had developed a malfunction similar to the XBOX 360 and Ibook's video chip had developed some connection issues with the mainboard. Due to the heat, the BGA solder connections under the chip has either flexed and become disconnected or corroded with the same result;
Try this: Remove the DVD/HD "sled" - Using 3 fingers, put pressure (not enough to break the mainboard, but a fair amount) on the heatsink for the video chipset. While doing this, press the power button. If it powers up, this is your problem. You might have to try a couple of times with varying amounts of pressure on the heatsink.
Tools: Needle nose pliers, philips screwdriver, small flat blade screwdriver, new heatsink compound (I suggest AS5), a heat gun
The fix: Firstly, the mainboard must be removed from the case, and the heatsink removed from the video chipset. To remove the push-pins, use a pair of needlenose pliers from the back of the mainboard to squeeze the expanders to release the pins. If yours is like mine, after removing the heatsink, you will find that the thermal compound has hardened and is no longer effective...have some AS5 handy. Second, place the mainboard on a flat work surface. Make sure memory, cables and mini-pci wireless card have been removed. Starting about 4 inches above the video chip, put your heat gun on low setting and ove a period of about a minute, move slowly down until you are about an inch above the video chip (this is to heat it slowly and not cause damage) hold there for 30 seconds - you should notice the solder on all the connections around the chip change sheen from dull to shiny - over about 30 seconds to a minute, slowly lift the heat gun away - letting the heat dissipate slowly. Turn the heat gun off and let the board cool for 10-15 minutes. Third, put a thin layer of AS5 on the video chip core and reapply the heatsink, being careful not to chip the core. then proceed to reassemble the machine.
I did this repair myself 2 days ago...still working great!

    Thanks a lot for this detailed solution, it saved my computer!! (well, at least so far)

    I had the same problem (in addition to bad colors from the VGA port), so I followed you advice. But I decided that before using the heat gun I'll try to just clean the hardened thermal paste and apply a new layer. And so I did - I cleaned off the old thermal paste gently with a small flat screwdriver, applied a new layer and assembled everything back. It worked like a charm, and fixed the VGA colors problem as well!

This is generally a hardware issue - if the computer is under warranty get it fixed through Acer. If not you may need professional help. You don't mention how old the laptop is but if it is older than a year or two and you live in a dusty environment it could be overheating. If the fan is not running or always running on super-high then it is probably overheating.

Another thing to try is using a boot CD (any boot CD will work) and see if the computer still shuts down after that 30 seconds. If yes, definitely hardware. If not, possible that it's a windows issue.

Hope that helps!

check the BIOS setup screen, when you get the ACER screen press F2 or F10 or the DEL or END or ESC key one of those will get you into the bIOS SETUP. Once there revise the boot order, make sure the CD is first to boot then HDD. Also review to see if the BIOS recosgnized the HDD. the symptom you are describing may be a bad HDD.

Acer Aspire 5052 nothing on LCD

If the LCD display worked until the processor over heated and then went blank, and would work again once it cooled down, then yes I do. As you described above, the screen going blank and blank still on reboot ( no time to cool down ), then the next day the LCD displayed again ( cooled down over night ). Appears to be directly related to the over heating problem.
But if the display problem progressed to the point that the PC would boot up cold and the display was still blank, then I would think your graphics card will need repair.
