Typed a few labels last week - now it turns on, stutters, beeps a few seconds and stops - it's like it's locked in a different mode, but it doesn't have a "mode" button, nor an LCD - closest manual I have is for a 4040 but that's a more elite machine

Perhaps you have the R. margin set at that point. Try resetting it at the R. end.

Be sure that the ribbon L/O and P/W are properly installed, move the slide switches back and forth a few times, check that no keys are stuck down, With the machine off see if the carrier will move back and forth. If not a littlt WD40 on the silver shaft it slides on will help.
Good luck

Hello- Of course the cheapest fix, is to try a second ribbon. If you need one we have them at FJAproducts.com
Most often the reason the ribbon cassette will not stay in place is due to not being seated properly. I am sure you have taken it out a few times and re installed it, but that is "normally" the only reason it "jumps up" one more thing to check in the lever near the daisy wheel. if it got bumped or unlocked the daisy wheel your ribbon will not seat properly.
Good luck.

Sounds like a broken wire attached to the carrier motor. If you remove the shell from the typewriter you can see the wiring inside. I suspect one of the wires has come disconnected or broken. Replace the wiring assembly or you can try to strip the two ends of the broken wire and twist them together, then use some electrical tape to secure.
